“The sword, which we have.” Her expression sobered. “Unfortunately, we need an ancient spellbook too. I can sketch some details of it because I saw it in my mind, but I don’t know where it is.”

“Well, that’s handy,” Simon said. “We found a spellbook and didn’t know what it was for, only that a spell we were using said we would need the book.”

Isaac had so many questions he wanted to ask, but he expected them finding the book was another one of those things that happened while he and Kate were in the room. Like everything else they wanted to know, they’d learn about it sooner or later.

Mirek turned to Kate, a small smile on his face. “I’m glad you didn’t need my services today.”

A laugh of relief burst from Kate. “Me too. Now, we?—”

An FBI agent landed inside the workshop less than five feet away. “Protect yourselves!” he shouted. “We’re under attack!”

23

“For fuck’s sake!” Kate muttered. She was getting really sick and tired of being attacked. Especially at her shop.

“Kate, flash to my apartment,” Isaac ordered.

“I need to get the sword.” She turned toward her workbench as a large crash, like metal on metal, resonated through the building.

Spinning back around, she saw men storm into her shop. One of her large workshop doors rocked back and forth on the floor, the hinges torn from its frame.

Kate started to count the number of men coming at them but lost track at ten as they continued to flood in. They numbered maybe fifteen or twenty, outnumbering their group, even with the FBI agents.

“I’ve contacted, Jack,” Damon yelled over the sound of stomping boots and the men calling to each other as they came toward them.

“Throw up shields,” Jack commanded as he landed amongst their group.

“We need Reece too,” Sam shouted.

“Here,” Reece declared from where he landed beside Jack.

Kate threw up a protective shield around herself. She felt like an idiot, realizing she could have done the same thing at the restaurant with Isabella. If she’d done it before they had grabbed her, she wouldn’t have been hurt that night.

“Kate, get the sword and leave,” Isaac demanded.

Isaac was right to tell Kate to leave. She needed to protect the sword because she was the only one who could, but she was also the only one pregnant with his child. He hadn’t said it because he didn’t need to. He was right; she needed to leave. For both reasons.

“Look who we have here,” a voice bellowed from the front of her shop. She looked up to see Crouching Man from the restaurant walk toward the front of his group of minions. “It’s the bitch from the restaurant,” he told the group.

“Holy fuck,” she whispered under her breath. Beside Crouching Man was the other guy from the restaurant, but that wasn’t what shocked her. Her astonishment came from seeing two of the restaurant’s patrons standing in front of her as mind-controlled minions. That could have been her and Isabella.

A hush fell over the room like a calm before the storm. Both groups stood, facing off.

She wanted to stay and help, but she also wanted to protect her unborn child and the sword. It was an easy decision.

But to get the sword, she’d have to drop her protection.

“I’m leaving,” she said loudly enough for Isaac and Jack to hear. Telepathy wouldn’t work with her shield up, and she wouldn’t drop her protection until the last moment.

“Good, you’re useless to us,” Jack said equally as loud.

Kate froze—she knew Jack’s comment was to aid her escape, but his words felt no different than the taunts from her past.

Like snapshots flashing before her eyes, she could see Brandon at the prom saying he didn’t need her anymore, that he’d gotten what he wanted. Then Justin calling her a cold-hearted bitch. Finally, Ethan asking for his engagement ring back and saying she couldn’t cut it.

To all three of them, she had become useless. They had used her until they got what they wanted and then discarded her.

“Kate.”
