“Go on up, Ms. Adams.” The doorman waved her through with a smile.

Dex was probably in pretty bad shape, so she told herself this would be just a nursing visit. No hanky panky, a situation that was assured when the door was opened by Tara Fitzpatrick.

The young mom was her usual glamorous self in high-heeled boots and a lovely teal wraparound dress that accentuated every curve. Beautifully highlighted blonde hair fell in gorgeous waves over her shoulders. Her makeup was perfectly on point.

Meanwhile Ashley, despite making an effort to look somewhat presentable (mostly with pretty underwear, which she couldn’t exactly whip out in the presence of her imaginary rival), looked like something one of her dogs had thrown up.

“Hi!” Tara grinned. “So that’s why he’s been trying to get rid of us.” She called over her shoulder. “Dexter, you should have said.”

“Let her through,” came the reply. “Then see yourself out.”

Tara pulled Ashley into a hug. “So glad you’re here. I knew you two had something special going on.”

“I’m just here to check on him. A friendly visit.”

“Okay!” Tara moved past Ashley across the threshold. “Come on, Georgia!”

The neighbor was here, too? The perfectly-put together socialite emerged from the living room in a tight-fitting strapless red cocktail dress and sparkly heels.

At ten o’clock in the morning.

“Hi, Ashley! Thank God you’re here. Rather you than me, he’s being a total bear.”

“Are you going or coming?” Too late, Ashley realized she sounded rude—and possibly territorial. “Sorry, you look amazing.”

“Oh, thanks. Who knew bankers were such party animals? Hold up a second, Tara.”

Tara smirked. “Nice to see that chemistry paying dividends. You two are adorable together.”

What was the point in denying it?

Georgia was Tara’s smirk-twin. “You know something? Dex is always complaining about the noise from my parties, to which everyone has an invite, by the way, but I had no idea how thin the walls were until your visit a couple of weeks ago.”

Ashley’s cheeks heated to furnace levels. “I’m sorry. We were … playing with the kitten.”

“Right. Sometimes I call mine that, too.” She called out, “Bye, Dex. We’re really leaving now,” then in a lower register to Ashley, “Have fun playing doctor and nurse.”

“Okay, thanks.”

Ashley closed the door and leaned against it.

“Are they gone?” Dex called out.

“Yeah.” Ashley walked through to the living room and was greeted with the sight of Dex in the pose of a decadent prince, lying across the sofa in an erotically-thin pair of sweatpants—and that was it. All that was missing was a servant with a fan and another to dispense grapes right into his sensual mouth. His chest was exposed, a large darkening bruise on his torso above his hip.

Putting aside the fact this was how he was dressed while both Tara and Georgia were here—jealousy did not suit her!—she dropped her shopping bags and moved forward quickly.

“Are you okay? I thought it was a head injury.”
