Not sure he bought that, but he did feel oddly lighter, not unlike after he’d discussed his career goals with Anton when they met up in New York. Talking about shit felt good. Who knew?

Dex hauled in a breath. “Could I ask a favor?”

“All this wisdom I give for free is not enough?”

“It’s a big one.”

He gestured for Dex to go on.

“I have my court case in a week and my lawyer thinks my good deeds are going to go in my favor but …”

“But what?”

“Ashley was going to say something nice about me, and I’ve messed that up.”

“You would like me to tell the judge what a harmless young idiot you are?”

“Something like that.”

Curt nod. “You can count on me.”

Another week, another book club.

Ashley had actually read the book this time, a World War II epic with a nice romance subplot, not that it made a difference. All anyone wanted to talk about was Dex.

Since his volunteer gig at the shelter was made public, she’d received plenty of texts from people she knew, most of them asking if he was as charming in real life as he seemed on camera.

More. So much more.

Now the Book Club Divorcees wanted details.

“Is he the worst flirt?” Eva asked. “I bet he is.”

“I bet he hit on every volunteer there,” Mallory said. “Extra with Ashley.”

Vera bristled. “Why’d you say that?”

Mallory smiled. “Because he needs her to say nice things about him.”

Eva leaned in. “C’mon, Ashley, spill the tea.”

She smiled wanly. “There’s nothing to spill. He put in a few shifts at the shelter, we did some promo that benefited us both, and now he’s on his way.”

She’d written the letter he needed and sent it to Sophie in Rebels PR. There was no reason to hope Dex would come by and ask for it himself. That was why he had people.

And she was just one of those people. Someone he met along the way, a fleeting presence in his drama-soaked life. Except she knew he was hurting, and she suspected he hurt less when he held her in his arms.

Had she done the right thing, telling him to fix things with his mother, with himself? Who was she to have such high expectations?

Mallory giggled. “Well, he definitely did a good job sucking up to Ashley. I saw he posted that picture with Willa at the butterfly garden.”

“A bunch of the players were there.” Eva tilted her head at Ashley. “Hanging with hockey royalty for a while. Must be nice.”

“It was,” Ashley said. “And he wasn’t sucking up to me. He’s just a considerate guy.”

“When he wants something.” Lainey scrolled on her phone. “I bet he’s a total tease. He’s probably praying for a lady judge so he can work his magic for his court case.”
