“Long enough. So your ex dumped you for some younger chick. I get that it’s knocked your confidence, but what I see is a hot, vibrant, sensual woman with a body I want to kiss and lick and do very bad things to. So all I need from you is a yes, a when, and a where.”

Stepping back, he bent down and seemed to communicate something non-verbal to Bandit. Then he gifted her that scorching grin and headed out the door.

Likes: Butterflies, Taylor Swift, hockey, Mom’s lasagna, too many other things to mention

Dislikes: Root beer, fart jokes, all the boys at school

“I met Dex O’Malley today.”

Maeve looked up from her phone at her niece. “The hockey player?”

“He’s volunteering at the shelter.”

Her sister stared at Ashley, who was slicing a baguette on the kitchen counter. “Is this true?”

“He started there a couple of weeks ago. We were asked to be discreet. By the team.” Of course she hadn’t told Willa to keep it a secret, but after what had happened today, she wished she’d mentioned it sooner, if only so she could have prepared for the heated flush that consumed her body on hearing his name. “So, don’t gossip about it.”

Maeve snorted. “This is about his court case?”

“What court case?” Willa asked.

Ashley made the eyes of ‘don’t go there’ to her sister, who responded casually with, “He got into a bit of trouble. A fight with someone.” She returned her attention to Ashley. “Has he talked about it?”

“No. I’ve barely spoken to him.” We’re too busy flirting and mauling each other. “He’s just there to put in some hours, like a pre-emptive community service.”

Though she had wondered today if there might be more to Dex. Seeing him with Bandit had melted her ice-compacted heart a touch. Surrounded by cute, often pathetic animals all day should have made her immune to that kind of display, but apparently not.

That was before the kiss.

She was still reeling from it. She couldn’t count the number of times she’d touched her lips in wonder, still questioning whether it was all a dream.

“He’s not one for following the rules,” she said diplomatically. If he was, he wouldn’t be messing around with a woman of her advanced years.

All I see is a hot, vibrant, sensual woman with a body I want to kiss and lick and do very bad things to. Who talked like that?

Willa giggled. “He put his fingers in the cage! I told him that was not a good idea. It would be injudicious.”

Ashley smiled at her daughter. “He was pretty impressed with you.”

“He called me Sparkle. Oh, I need to get my sweatshirt.” Willa jumped out of her chair and left the room.

“Not sure that’s the most appropriate company for my niece,” Maeve said sourly. “What if she starts searching online for him and reads about, y’know?”

Ashley had assumed one casual meeting between a naughty jock and her innocent daughter would be harmless, but Maeve made a good point. Dex was the ultimate bad boy, yet here she was thinking about what might happen between them, because he had definitely implied that kiss wasn’t the end of it.

She should not be considering any non-work contact with the likes of Dex O’Malley, or any contact that involved lips, hands, or other body parts. With any luck, he’d forget all about it by tomorrow.

She, on the other hand, would treasure the memory and come back to it when she was feeling low.

“He’ll just be there for a few more days. They’ll take some photos, release a press statement, and he’ll be gone.”

Maeve looked unimpressed. “And you have to testify for him?”

“Just provide a statement about what an asset he is at the shelter, that kind of thing.”
