Then they both started laughing.

Wow, why did that feel so good? Probably because it had been a while since she felt a connection of any sort with a man. Best not to read anything more into it, because this man was not unlike most nine-year-olds, meaning he was a lot.

“It’s okay.” Ashley patted her daughter’s shoulder. “Time to let Dex get on.”

“And can we visit the locker room?” Willa’s voice was extra squeaky.

“Let’s not push our luck.”

“Of course you can,” Dex said easily. “I’ll make sure your name is on the list. But Willa?”

“What?”

“You have to cheer for me because you’re my guest.”

Willa nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! I was already a fan, now I’m a superfan. Thanks, Dex!” And off she trotted, secure in the knowledge that life couldn’t get any better—at least until tomorrow night.

Dex grinned. “Guess you’re coming to the hockey game.”

“Guess I am.”

“Did you want to bring anyone else? Your sisters, perhaps?”

She thought it over. “I could call Jerome and see if he’s interested?”

Storm clouds scudded across his face and a muscle in his jaw bunched. Well.

“Kidding.”

“That guy and his seed would not be welcome.”

Just the mention of Jerome’s emissions had Ashley laughing again, and thankfully Dex joined in.

“I’d better head out.”

She nodded, feeling a little lost, which was ludicrous. He had to go. She needed him to go. Yet a part of her craved what was happening here, this new and easy back-and-forth between them. Only when she spent too long in his presence, ease disappeared and in its place was a heady desire, charged and thick.

She wanted to kiss and be kissed, touch and be touched. She wanted skin on skin and any number of naughty things to be done to her.

So he really needed to leave now.

“Thanks for having me over,” he murmured, then leaned in to kiss her on the cheek, just as she turned her head. Their mouths brushed. Groaning, he touched his forehead to hers.

“Fuck, Ashley, you have to quit that.”

“What?”

“Making me hard as a puck for you.”

A blush crept up her cheeks. “I’m not doing it on purpose. I think, maybe, you’re just prone to constant erections. Your youth and all.”

“Don’t try to fob it off on me. This is a ‘you’ problem.”

The words of a consummate charmer. For Dex, this was merely a run-of-the-mill flirtation with a woman who was clearly desperate for attention.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to luxuriate in the glow, if only for a while. Making a nice play of reluctantly pulling away—the moves were something else—he placed a hand on the door handle. “I’ll text about the game, okay?”

“Okay.”
