“Yeah, but you should stay in this shot. He’s better when we’re both here.”

“I’d rather not be on camera.”

He knew she was shy, had some hang-ups about her appearance, but this was all for a good cause. Or maybe it was that she didn’t want to be seen on camera with someone like him.

“It’s good PR for the shelter, playing with a troubled pup.” He leaned in so only she could hear. “And the little dog, too.”

She let out that laugh, the filthy one that went right to his balls. “You don’t need my help here. I’m sure Sophie would prefer if it was just you.”

Tara cut in. “I think both of you would be great. This campaign is all about bringing Dex back into the fold of normal, functioning society where people don’t do unmentionable things in nightclubs or punch hockey assholes in bars.” Extra disapproving look at him. Et tu, Tara? “Seeing Dex doing something fun with a normal member of that society will look good.” She turned to Ashley. “Just a few minutes. If you don’t feel comfortable or don’t like the footage, we won’t use it.”

Ashley didn’t look convinced.

“Could you give us a second?” Without waiting for permission, he cupped her elbow and brought her and Bandit a few feet away.

“What’s the real issue here?”

“The real issue? I—it’s what I said. I’m not a fan of how I look on camera.”

“Even if I say you look hot as fuck and I know what the hell I’m talking about?”

“Dex …”

“Remember you were telling Willa that looks don’t matter and that what’s inside counts? That she’s beautiful in every possible way and screw the haters?” So her ex hadn’t been kind about her curves. Fuck him. He placed a hand on a generous hip, part of this woman’s body that he adored. “I want to touch you everywhere, your round ass, your plump breasts, those gorgeous thighs I want to live between. I think you’re beautiful, your daughter thinks you’re beautiful, and there’s no one better to represent this organization than you. Unless it’s that you don’t want to be seen with me? Just pretend I’m a very naughty dog in your care and no one will know that I’ve been drilling you six ways from Sunday for the last couple of weeks.”

Her mouth dropped open and color tagged her cheeks. “You’re right. I shouldn’t care what anyone thinks, and this is the example I want to set for my daughter. But you’re wrong about one thing.”

“Now, that doesn’t surprise me.”

She touched his chest, gently. “I’m not ashamed to be seen with you. I just don’t want you to have to explain anything when I’m looking at you like I can’t wait to get you off camera for a thorough licking.”

Okay, then. He liked this Ashley. He liked her very much.

“How about we get this over with quickly then, so we can get started on the lick-fest sooner?”

Those apple-green eyes sparkled. “Okay.”

“You guys ready?” Tara called out.

You bet we are.

“Let me introduce you guys to my favorite guest at Riverbrook Animal Shelter,” Dex said, keeping his finger under his little friend’s collar. “This is Bandit and he’s a … uh, what kind of dog is he, Ash?”

“Well, Dex, Bandit is a good dog.”

His mouth twitched. “Right. He is a good dog. But do we have any specifics on his breed?”

“Oh, his breed?” She grinned and gave Bandit a furry fondle. “He’s a terrier mix, probably some Yorkshire in there. We’ve been working on his coat which was in pretty bad shape when he arrived.”

“I’m guessing it made him a bit cranky.”

“That’s for sure. We all get a bit irritable when people aren’t so nice to us. That’s what happened with Bandit. He wasn’t treated so well, but we’ve been giving him lots of TLC. Actually, Dex has been. He spends a good chunk of his time here with Bandit, bringing him out of his shell. Both of them, such good boys.” She gave a very hammy wink. “Did I get that right?”

Dex laughed. “Your check’s in the mail.”

“Cut, cut, cut!” Sophie threw up her hands. “You can’t imply that this is a setup.”

“I’m sorry,” Ashley said, not sounding sorry at all. “I was being a smart-ass.”
