“Okay.”

“But send me the other stuff anyway. I’d like to have it. And Soph?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m sorry for making your life a misery these last eighteen months.”

She smiled placidly. “It’s my job, Dex.”

“Sure, but it’s not fair that you have to spend so much of your resources on me. I’ve been a total asshole and I apologize.”

Her surprise was evident. “Thanks, I appreciate that. Let me talk to the photographer and make sure he has what he needs.”

Next, he sought out Ashley, who appeared to be in a whisper-fight with her ex. About to stick his nose in, his path forward was halted by Fitz.

“O’Malley.”

“El Jefe.”

Fitz squinted at him. “I’m glad to see you digging deep. You’re playing well, staying out of trouble, and this”—he looked around—“is a good fit for you.”

“Sophie’s idea. She’s been a trouper.”

“She has. But you’ve stepped up, on the ice and off it, and your effort hasn’t gone unnoticed.”

Dex tried his damnedest not to enjoy the warm glow in his chest. Best to dim it with reasonably minimum expectations. “Still have my court appearance to get through.”

“Yes, about that. You do realize that Ms. Adams is supposed to supply a reference for you?”

He swallowed. “Yeah, I know that.”

“I’m guessing you can’t help yourself when it comes to the flirting, but maybe don’t be so obvious.”

“Obvious?” He wanted to scream in this guy’s face that he was in love.

Damn. Was that what he was feeling? Because he liked it. He liked the man he was with Ashley, which translated to being a good teammate, and maybe even a better person.

“You need to stay focused, O’Malley. Your agent’s been in touch, reminding me what a good boy you’ve been, how valuable you are to the team. I’m seeing that, too.”

Was that a contract dangling over his head? The dream result. He just needed to keep his nose clean.

“But you’re here at the shelter for a reason. Good PR, not to flirt with the manager and piss her off when she figures out your game. Because she will. Don’t screw up now when you’re so close to the finish line.”

Dex could only nod as Fitz returned to the bosom of his perfect family.

Something was up with Greg. He usually went out of his way to avoid Ashley when he dropped off Willa, so his continued presence here was highly suspect.

Distracted by Esme, Willa moved off to say hi to Tara.
