That was probably the nicest thing Petrov had ever said to him, and it made him even more determined to clean up his act.

After practice where he managed to run circles around Banks and Foreman, he found he had a message from Anton. Once he’d changed, he headed to one of the exam rooms to call him in private.

“Hey, Anton.”

“Dex, how are you?”

“I’m good. Better than good, actually. I’m great.”

Anton chuckled. “Saw your animal shelter spot. You seemed in good form. Happier.”

“I am. Things are going well. Kit said the bosses like what they saw.” His agent had called this morning with an update on how pleased Sophie and Fitz were with the reaction to the campaign.

“Any update on the contract?”

“Not yet. I might not be Rebels material.”

“It’s okay to say you want it, son.”

Dex rubbed a hand over his mouth. “Saying it out loud seems like tempting fate.”

Anton must have been shocked at Dex’s uncharacteristic display of vulnerability because he didn’t speak for a long beat.

“They’re probably waiting on the outcome of the court case. That’s coming up soon, right?”

“Yeah. It’s hard to know which way it’s going to go.”

Anton didn’t tell him it would be okay, for which Dex was grateful.

“Listen, you’re in New York in a couple of days, right? Any chance of a ticket for an old friend?”

Dex started. “You want to come to the game?”

“Hell, yeah. Maybe we could get together for lunch beforehand.”

“You’d have time for that?” Anton always seemed so busy with his coaching gig, but maybe he’d thrown himself into work since losing his beloved wife a few years ago. Maybe he was as lonely as Dex.

The older man sighed. “I always have time for you, son. For the last couple of years, you’ve gone down a different road and you didn’t need me nagging you to straighten yourself out. You had to figure that out for yourself.”

Dex hadn’t wanted to be a bother, but now he realized he might have been too closed off when it came to the people in his life. Anton had always been there for him, yet Dex had preferred to think of himself as a lone wolf with no connections.

“I’d love to meet up.”

Anton sounded pleased. “It’ll be good to see you, son.”

Yes, it would.

Ashley viewed the video created by Rebels PR and let the voices in her head run their mouths off.

She’d assumed—wrongly, it seemed—that they’d use the one with her, Dex, and Bandit. She’d had fun. Possibly too much fun.

You were throwing yourself at him, Ash! Everyone could see it. It was just an embarrassment.

Someone had evidently decided it was too much, which was probably for the best. What Greg had said gnawed at her, and while Dex was lovely about it all in defending her, even going so far as to mention “dating,” he was probably only doing that to stick one to her ex.

The video they did use had plenty of likes and re-posts, and the shelter had received several calls this morning about volunteering. Donations were up as well, so it looked like both organizations had benefitted.

Of course there was still the reference letter she was supposed to write to the judge. That would be easy. She would have no problem telling anyone who asked what a good guy he was.
