Which meant no. But hecould be stubborn too. “Yes. We will. If something happened to you,I would never forgive myself.”

After widening in surprise, her dark eyes softened, and his insides turned to mush at thesight.

“Well, for now, he’s gone.I’ll make a few calls to my sisters, and a friend whohas…connections, and see what they can dig up.”

He’d make some callshimself. Later. When she couldn’t listen in.

He had a different problemnow, though. The thing was, sitting here with Elodie’s body pressedagainst him, her lush scent around him, her lips kissing his in thesweetest way only moments ago, and the danger run off for now andthe effects of the arrow still sharpening every sense, everyreaction to her… He shifted uncomfortably. “I brought bagels,” helatched onto the first thing that wasn’t fucking he could think of.“Some might still be edible.”

Elodie smiled, the light inher eyes knowing. “I know I just got almost kidnapped, but is itterrible if I say I’m not hungry for bagels quite yet?” shewhispered.

Part of him wanted to jumpin and take her up on the implied offer. But… “How hard did you hityour head?”

She blinked, then laughed.“Not hard enough to make me horny.”

Oh. Good. “I just…want to make sure you’reokay.”

The way she bit herlip…fuck. “I’m okay.” Her eyes turned liquid, hot and slumberous.“I could be a whole lot better.”

Thank the gods. “I couldhelp you with that,” he whispered back. Then kissed her, long andsoft and slow. The way he’d been wanting to for ages.

Chapter 7

“Tea?”

Elodie heard Chance’squestion over the hairdryer he’d let her borrow. “Getting overbeing attacked” sex had led to “against the wall sex” had led to“shower sex.” Now—after managing to place a few calls about herattack first, particularly to her friend Delilah—she sat on a teakstool at his vanity, wearing his shirt and boxers, drying her hairwith his dryer.

And itfelt…nice.

As long as she ignored the monster and thegnawing hunger inside her. The kind food wouldn’t satisfy, onlyaura.

She clicked the dryer off. “What?”

Only he didn’t answer.Instead, he stood staring at her with a crooked smile. “You lookgood in here Elodie. In my place.”

No feelings, she tried to remind herself. But gods she wantedto agree. Wanted it to mean something.

But getting involved wasn’tfair to either of them. Eventually he wouldn’t be able to handleher reality.

The last time she’d gottenfeelings involved with a man, he’d eventually become sickened bywhat she did. By the blood and the killing. She’d tried to hide it,but even his imagination was too much for him. The demigod beforethat had grown jealous over her occupation and the men she washunting. Even though she’d been killing those men. He had tried tohave Zeus punish her for “cheating.” That had been a whole thing. The gods’ punishments weren’t exactly level-headed or fair. Besideswhich, she’d done nothingwrong by their laws.

So she stuffed her own wants away andwrinkled her nose at Chance. “What did you ask a second ago?”

He seemed to have to shake himself out ofhis own head. “I asked if you wanted tea.”

Did he know tea was one ofher favorite things? Or had she landed on the only man in Americawho liked tea? “Yes. But I’d better make it.”

Really, she only said it topoke at him a bit. They were both competitive by nature. GettingChance to lose his cool had become a bit of a game through theyears. One he reciprocated.

He didn’t disappoint now.In typical Chance-fashion, he lifted a single eyebrow.“Seriously?”

Elodie shrugged, then pulled out her sexiestpout. “I make Very. Good. Tea.”

He crossed his arms, unaffected, which she found oddly sexy. “I tell you what. You makesome and I’ll make some and then we’ll compare.”

She shrugged. “I’ll win, but if your ego canhandle it, okay.”

She flicked the dryer backon and turned her back on him. Ten minutes later, she found him inthe kitchen with all sorts of tea paraphernalia scattered acrosshis counter. So he really did like tea. That was so…cute. Sheslowed, taking in the scene.
