I kneaded her breast, enjoying the weight of her in my hand. I sucked on her creamy skin. She must’ve liked it because her nails raked my scalp. My tongue lashed her nipple. It stiffened into a point. Violet bucked and whimpered as I licked it, faster and faster. She stroked me everywhere—head, face, shoulders, biceps, chest. She was as hungry for my body as I was for hers.

She broke away, panting. “Stop.”

I released her nipple with a wet pop and glanced at her. She was half-dressed, her hair mussy, her lips swollen. She shoved herself off me, covering herself.

I reached for her, frowning. “Did I hurt you?”

“No…I just, we can’t do this.”

I swallowed a groan. “Why?”

A vivid blush ran from her face to the tits I’d been sucking. “I can’t.”

An ache pounded in my cock. What the fuck was she talking about? I stared at her, the taste of her torturing me. “So this is how it’s always going to be between us? Guilt and denial?”

“We can’t be together.”

“You’re wearing my ring.”

She gave me a wounded look. “But you belonged to her.”

I smirked at her weak excuse. The idea of me belonging to Elise, a woman I saw for sex, was ridiculous.

“You were hers,” she murmured in a voice so small, it wiped the grin off me. “It feels like I’m betrayin’ her memory.”

I frowned. “It wasn’t like that, Bumpkin.”

“You were with her. You dated her.”

I’d never once been on a date with Elise Harper. “What I had with your sister was superficial.”

“Isn’t that what we have?”

“We’re getting married.”

She hugged herself. “I know, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m takin’ what was hers.”

I ran a hand through my hair. “You think too much.”

“Well, I can’t help it. You haven’t told me anything about your relationship.”

And I won’t. “Some things should stay private.”

Violet’s pleading gaze squeezed my heart. “I don’t need details. Just the bullet points.”

Sighing, I sat up straight. “We saw each other for a few months, and then it ended.”

“What happened? Why’d she run away from you?”

“There was no running. She stopped seeing me, that’s all.”

Violet said nothing, a distant, sad look in her eyes.

My lips burned, a reminder of a line I shouldn’t have crossed. I got up, balling my hands into fists. This wasn’t me. I didn’t get tangled up in emotions. Not for anyone.

But damn it, that kiss. It was like touching a live wire, a jolt of something that had no place in the calculated life I’d built. My body screamed for more, but judging by the stubborn set of her jaw, she didn’t trust me. Earning that would take more than sweet talk. She wouldn’t trust me until I found her sister’s murderer.

I flung the office door open and left.
