My phone buzzed. I took it out.

Becky

Everything okay?

Yeah. On my way home.

As I walked down the street, ice stabbed at my spine. I paused, looking back at the bar. Neon wisps from the glowing sign disappeared into the darkness. I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Something sinister lurked in this part of the city, and I was getting closer. I wouldn’t rest until I found out the truth.

FOUR

ACHILLE

I sat on a wooden chair in my brother’s office, shirtless, as his assistant kneeled beside me. I didn’t like her much, and the feeling was mutual. Pretty as a picture, but with a smile as rare as an honest cop in this town. My brother owned her, but the engagement ring on her finger told another story.

The door opened.

Santino strolled in, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His narrowed gaze landed on Delilah at my feet, and then on me. “What the fuck is going on?”

“Bro, relax. She’s patching me up.”

Santino swore loudly. “What happened?”

Ah, brotherly love. It never failed to warm my black heart.

“Just a scratch, no worries.” I shifted, and a jolt ripped through my body. “The pain is a bit…intense.”

“Why didn’t you go to the doctor?”

“Could have. But then I’d miss an opportunity to flirt with her.” I winked at Delilah, and she rolled her eyes. The joke sailed over my brother’s head.

His glare sharpened. “Lay off Delilah.”

Santino was always playing the big brother card, trying to keep me in line.

I looked at her. “I’ve been nothing but a gentleman, right, sweetheart?”

“Both of you, pipe down.” Delilah pulled on a pair of latex gloves. She shot me a look—one that said she’d gut me if I tried anything. She prodded my abdomen near the neat row of four tiny puncture wounds. The pain was like a rusty nail slamming through my flesh.

Fuck.

I squeezed my fists.

She moved away, frowning. “What gave you this wound?”

I braced myself. “A fork.”

Santino barked a laugh. “What did you do, insult his cooking?”

I stretched, trying to ease the tension. “I attempted something out of my repertoire. Things got out of hand.”

“What happened?”

“Everything went pear-shaped soon as I wrapped my hands around his neck. He was strong for a guy that skinny. It took a while to bring him down. He grabbed a fork and stabbed me.”

She swabbed the inflamed skin, and I hissed. That stings.

Santino shook his head. “Kill…why?”
