“Nice,” she hissed, crossing her arms. “I’m glad everything we discussed about trust sailed over your head.”
“Violet, please?—”
“What were you to her?”
I licked my lips. “A client.”
Her brow furrowed. “For what?”
“You don’t want to know.”
She pointed at the door. “Tell me right now, or I’m walkin’ out on you.”
You can’t. She’ll never forgive you.
I remained silent, calling her bluff. “It’s not safe for you to leave.”
“I don’t care,” she burst, her eyes welling. “I’d rather be alone than be with someone I can’t trust.”
Her tears twisted a knife in my gut.
“You can trust me, sweetheart. I promise.”
“I can’t.”
Violet ran to the door. She ripped it open, and I slammed it closed. She balled her hands. A wild animal, ready to fight. This wouldn’t be resolved with a hug and a kiss. I had to tell her.
I sighed. “Elise was a prostitute.”
Her fists loosened. I could see her wrestling with disbelief. Her gaze searched mine, but she wouldn’t find any lies.
“You were…her john?”
I ground my teeth. “Yes.”
She blanched. “I don’t believe you. If that’s true, w-why didn’t you tell me?”
“What good would that do? After everything you’ve been through, I couldn’t add more pain to your life.” Guilt throbbed inside me. “You love your sister, and Jack’s better off not knowing. I didn’t want him to think he isn’t welcome in this world, because he is.”
She flinched. “You paid my sister for sex?”
“Yes.”
Violet sank into a chair. “How…how long did this go on for?”
“A few months.”
Her eyes widened. “Why not come home if she was desperate for money?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t ask.”
She groaned. “How many guys was she doing this with?”
I bit my inner cheek, choosing my words carefully. “You’ve heard of a gun moll, right? She was like a friend that everybody…passed around.”
She shook her head. “Oh, Elise.”
“It’s not that bad. The girls are for members only, and they’re taken out on dates, given clothes, makeup, whatever they desire. If they’re exclusive to one guy, he pays for her living expenses. That’s what I did.”
