“Unfortunately, Kathryn’s husband passed away not long after. Myra and Annie became aware of this horrendous situation and through their connections they were able to track down the perpetrators. Turned out they were well-heeled businessmen out on a weekend joyride. I can’t say how they got their comeuppance, but I can assure you it was justified.” Izzie’s eyes sparkled as she remembered the incident.

Zoe was transfixed. “How long have you known Myra and Annie?”

“Several years,” Izzie replied. “They also helped me when I discovered a little boy was being abused by his stepmother. She would beat him with her shoes.”

“Really?” Zoe’s eyes widened.

“Yep. Let’s just say the wicked stepmother will never be able to wear Charles Jourdan pumps again.” Zoe winked as she took a sip of their nighttime beverage.

“Wow.” Zoe was dumbfounded.

“There’s plenty more. One of Myra’s childhood friends got hoodwinked into some youth preservation and restoration program run by three doctors. They had offices in Aspen, New York, and London. Called it ‘Live, Life, Long.’ They preyed on rich widows and were handing out uppers saying they were nutraceuticals and bioceuticals. The women would be high and therefore would think they were rejuvenated. Then they would crash and go back for an injection at five thousand a pop!”

Zoe shook her head. “People can be really horrible.”

“That’s why there are people like us. The Sisters.” Izzie smiled and looked at the clock. It was almost one A.M. “I think it’s time we hit the sheets.”

Zoe stretched and yawned. “This was certainly not the day I had imagined.” She paused. “Izzie, I don’t know how to thank you. I feel such a sense of relief.”

Izzie gave her a big hug. “Get some rest. We’ll pick this up in the morning.” The women parted on the second-floor landing, each going to her own private quarters with Rufus settling in with Izzie.

Zoe was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Izzie, on the other hand, wanted to give Abner the heads-up on what was about to happen. Another mission.

The next morning Zoe followed Rufus to the kitchen, where Izzie was already making coffee, heating scones, and dishing out fresh fruit. “What time is it?” asked Zoe, still only half awake.

“Almost ten. How did you sleep?”

“Like I haven’t in weeks. That was some powerful toddy.” She snickered. “Oh, and all the other stuff that came before.”

Izzie grinned as she set a mug of coffee in front of Zoe. “Yoko should be here in about an hour.”

Zoe looked up from her mug. “I didn’t ask last night. There was so much stuff spinning in my head. But what’s Yoko’s background?”

“She specializes in martial arts. When she’s not running the nursery.”

“I see.” Zoe nodded. “And Alexis?”

“She got pinned for a stock scam she knew nothing about. After her release Myra helped her get into law school. Now she works for Nikki’s all-female firm.” Izzie paused. “She is also a master of disguise.” She winked.

“This sounds like a British mystery caper.”

“We certainly have all the right characters for one, including Charles and Fergus.”

“What’s their story?” Zoe asked.

“I’d rather not say, but as you could tell, they hail from very high security backgrounds.”

“Sounds like MI6.”

Izzie spit out her coffee. Before she had a chance to respond, the doorbell rang and Rufus ran to greet their visitor. “Must be Yoko.” Izzie pressed the communication button on the intercom. “Good morning.”

“Hey. It’s Yoko.”

Izzie hit the release button for the front door. Yoko was hidden behind a large bouquet of dazzling blue flowers. It was an assortment of periwinkle hydrangeas, love-in-a-mist, and grape hyacinth. Her face finally appeared after she handed the flowers to Izzie as she said her good-mornings.

“These are gorgeous! Yoko, you are a true artist,” Izzie proclaimed. She opened one of the massive pantry doors and reached for a vase. Yoko gave the stems a clean cut as Izzie placed them one at a time in water. The blue monochromatic colors were striking against the kitchen’s gray slate backsplash.
