“You are very pale.” Alexis kept staring at Maggie’s light Irish complexion. “We should give you a slight spray tan.”

“Ew. Do we have to? I hate that stuff,” Maggie protested.

“There isn’t enough SPF to keep you from frying in the sun. Just a shade or two darker. I’ll bring a touch-up kit.”

“But I’ll mostly be in a vehicle or inside.”

“Not twenty-four-seven. You need to try to blend in somewhat. I think you’d look more conspicuous with your porcelain skin, sitting in a car. You might as well hold up a sign that says, ‘Hello! I don’t belong here. ’ ”

“Yeah, yeah,” Maggie huffed.

“Now, what can we do about your hair?” Alexis stood and picked through Maggie’s curls. “Wig or color rinse?”

“It’s gonna be hot, so let’s ditch the wig and do some color,” Maggie said. “I’ll wear a hat, too.”

“Good idea.” Alexis went to a cabinet that contained a variety of hair products. “Medium brown should do it.”

Maggie rolled her eyes. “Whatever you say.”

“What kind of hat? Baseball cap?”

“Sure. Got something Caribbean?” Maggie was half joking. She knew if anyone had it, Alexis would.

“How about the Jamaican Reggae Boyz soccer team?”

“Will it match my hair?” Maggie joked.

Alexis tossed the black, green, and yellow cap at her. Maggie plopped it on her head and gave it a thumbs-up of approval.

“Next, probably a few pairs of khaki cargo pants, T-shirts, and a pair of overalls.”

“You mean like my regular outfits?” Maggie snorted. She was not known as a fashionista, so Alexis’s ideas were good ones.

“Do you know what kind of vehicle you’ll be in?” Alexis began to collect the hair-coloring items.

“Probably an SUV. Something nondescript, obviously.”

“Right.” Alexis began to mix the concoction that was about to transform Maggie into a less conspicuous Orphan Annie. “Come. Sit here.” Alexis wrapped a plastic cape around Maggie’s neck. “Comfy?”

“Indubitably.” Maggie laughed. “And who are you going to be?”

“Since it’s an office job, I’ll wear a simple pantsuit and an ombre brown, chin-length wig. I’m used to wearing them.” She glanced at her collection.

“Oh yes. I like that one on you. Reminds me of Rihanna’s latest. As in today’s latest. It will probably be different tomorrow.”

Alexis chuckled. “That’s what wigs are for, baby cakes.”

While Maggie sat with her hair color developing, Alexis grabbed several pantsuits. She held up a bright blue one under her chin. “Hillary Clinton?”

Maggie burst out laughing. “You? Hardly. I think you should tone it down though.”

Alexis went through one of the racks. “How about these?” One was a mustard-colored suit, another was olive green, the third burgundy. “Muted enough?”

Maggie scrunched her nose. “Boring. But good!”

“All I need are some flat shoes.” Alexis had legs that went on forever. Heels would be out of place in an office in the Caribbean. A club? For sure. Alexis went through the cubbyholes and plucked out a simple leather attaché case. She hung the pieces on a rack and studied the outfits. “That should do it.”

The timer went off, indicating that it was time to unveil Maggie’s new hair color: medium brown. Alexis pulled out the blow-dryer and went to work on Maggie’s hair, making it as straight as possible. “I think we should use a flat iron on it,” Alexis suggested. “That should last for a few days, and I have a serum that will keep your hair from frizzing.”
