“You did what?” His voice boomed again. More complaints and admonishment. A nurse walked over to him.

“Mr. Chapman, if you do not lower your voice, I am going to have to take away your phone. Now please show some respect for the rest of the patients. And the staff !” She stood with her arms akimbo.

“Sorry.” He placed his hand over the phone again. “It’s a relative calling from the States.”

The nurse waved him off and stomped back to her station.

“As I was saying, I followed her to her apartment,” Louise continued.

“Did you speak to her?” Mason asked in a much quieter voice.

“Don’t be ridiculous. That would have blown my cover. Anyhow, I surveilled her Monday when she went to work early and then went out for a coffee. Some idiot almost ran me off the sidewalk.”

If only, Mason thought to himself.

“My boss was very impressed that I was able to infiltrate her office, get information, and follow her.”

Mason sighed. “Is there anything else you would like to share with me?”

“She went out for drinks with her assistant and a few of his mates.” She paused. “Not to worry. They play for their own team.”

Mason knew what she meant. “Anything else?”

“I don’t think she is seeing anyone in New York either.”

“And what makes you say that?” Mason was finally interested.

“Just a feelin’.”

“I know you, Louise. What else have you done?”

“I had a little chat with the doorman of her apartment building.”

“Oh, for the love of Pete.” Mason was exasperated.

“I asked him if there were any vacancies or single people in the building. Stuff like that.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That there were several single women. A few my age.”

“So you assumed he was referring to Zoe?”

“Well, I couldn’t come right out and ask him now, could I?”

“No, of course not,” he said sarcastically.

“But it’s been two days and I haven’t seen her with anyone.”

“I suppose that’s the good news.”

“Where are you, by the way?” Louise asked. “What’s all that dinging in the background?”

“I had a slight accident. Nothing serious, but I need an X-ray.”

“Why didn’t you say so? You let me prattle on and on!”

“As if anyone could stop you?” Mason chuckled for the first time that day.
