“Yo, Kathryn! What brings you to these here parts?”

Kathryn squinted and recognized Benny and Drew, partners in a big rig. Kathryn approached the two men. “Hey, guys. How’s it going?”

“Ya know. Same. Traffic. Detours. Tourists,” Benny replied. “And you?”

“I was headed to Lincoln, but I need some help.”

“Fire away!” Benny said.

“It’s a long story. Care for some breakfast?” Kathryn asked.

“Only if you’re buyin’. But I’d rather have a burger,” Drew answered.

“Whatever. It’s on me!” She grinned and slapped the two men on the back.

As they entered the truck stop diner, Reba, the owner’s wife, waddled over, with her permanent big grin flashing her two gold teeth, and a pot of coffee in her hand. “Howdy! Ain’t you boys done eatin’?” She chortled.

Benny looked at Kathryn. “Truth up. We just had somethin’.”

“Well, you can have more somethin’,” Kathryn encouraged him. The place was relatively empty. Most drivers were back on the road, but to be safe she picked a booth in the far corner of the diner.

Reba followed them to the table. “Getting cozy?” she joked.

“You betcha!” Kathryn responded. “I know what I’m having. Two eggs, over easy, bacon, nice and crisp, grits and biscuits.”

Benny was next. “Give me a double cheeseburger, bacon, and fries.”

“I don’t know where you put all that food,” Reba remarked.

“Since Kathryn’s buyin’, I figure I’ll find a place!” Benny said.

Drew chimed in. “Make it two burgers, bacon, and fries.”

Reba clicked her tongue. “Whatever you boys say.”

“So, what can we do ye fer?” Benny asked.

Kathryn leaned in closer. “I heard there is someone who is messing around with construction materials.”

“Heck, that happens all the time,” Drew said.

“I know, but we have an opportunity to stop a potentially hazardous situation.”

“Do tell.” Benny leaned in closer. Kathryn’s eyes almost started to water from the smell of his chewing tobacco.

“I need you to find the guy who is driving a load to Florence, Ohio. It’s going to Riverwood Elementary School.”

“Kids?” Benny looked horrified.

“Yes. A shipment of bad blocks is supposed to be delivered tomorrow morning, and I have got to stop it.”

“What ya got in mind?” Drew asked conspiratorially.

Kathryn looked around the diner to be certain no one could hear her. “I want someone to meet up with me and swap trailers.”

“Huh. In-ter-est-ing,” Drew commented.

“We swap trailers and he delivers my load to the construction site.”
