“And?”

“It’s as much as anyone is willing to pay. Take that non-fungible-token stuff. You pay for something you can’t touch, or hang on your wall, or place on a shelf. It’s a unique digital identifier that can’t be copied or substituted through what they call a blockchain.”

“You’re losing me,” Eileen said.

“Precisely. It’s all digital and has come under a lot of scrutiny. Some say it’s the equivalent of a Ponzi scheme and others defend it by comparing it to cryptocurrency. I dunno—I still like to feel those green bills in my wallet.”

“I’m with you on that part. I have to admit that technology is what pays my bills. Without it, I wouldn’t be as good at what I do.”

“Eileen, you are one smart woman. I think you’d be great regardless of what tools were at your disposal.”

“Thanks. Yes, I’ve had to count on my wits on many an occasion.”

“That’s what I’m talking about.”

There was a knock at the door. Maggie thought it might be Alexis. Instead, it was a messenger. “Maggie Spritzer?” he asked.

She was almost afraid to answer him. “Yes. I’m Maggie.”

“This is for you.” He handed her an envelope. “Please sign here.”

Maggie wasn’t sure what to do. She held the pen in the air. “Can you tell me who it’s from?”

He checked his paperwork and said, “It says, ‘The Countess. ’ ”

Maggie breathed a sigh of relief, although Annie rarely sent her anything via messenger. “Just a moment.” She pulled a ten-dollar bill from her wallet and handed it to the gentleman.

“Thank you. Enjoy your day.” He turned on his heel and walked down the hallway as Maggie watched with a confused look on her face.

As the elevator opened to let the messenger in, Alexis walked out. Maggie gave her a vigorous wave to hurry her up.

“What is it? Everything okay?” Alexis asked.

Maggie closed the door behind them and showed her the large white envelope. “It’s from Annie. Or so he said. All three of our names are on it.”

“Well, don’t just stand there—open it!” Alexis insisted.

The three women huddled together as Maggie gingerly peeled open the envelope. Inside was a note:

Maggie, Alexis, Eileen,

You’ve done the Sisters proud. Excellent work deserves excellent praise and a little fun. Please spend the next three days as my guest at the Excellence Club in Punta Cana.

Big hugs,

Annie.

P.S. A car will be picking you up at eleven, so get busy. Maggie, don’t forget sunscreen!

“Wow. That boss of mine is the bomb!” Maggie exclaimed.

Alexis and Eileen were equally ecstatic. “I don’t remember the last time I had a real vacation,” Eileen said.

“You mean sleeping in a pickup truck isn’t your idea of rest and relaxation?” Maggie joked.

“Not one bit.”

“But I brought snacks!” Maggie pouted.
