“What about Segundo?” Myra asked.

“We have that covered. He’ll be alright,” Annie assured her.

“I’m sure Alexis will be happy to hear that. She felt badly that he was an unwitting accomplice.”

“We’ll take care of that issue,” Charles said firmly. “There is no evidence he had any knowledge of the corruption going on. He was never on the premises when the coal ash was delivered and did not know exactly what the load was or what was being shipped. It was always at night.”

“What about the guard at REBAR?” Annie asked.

“His job was to check the drivers’ credentials. If they passed, he let them in,” Fergus answered.

“And the truck drivers?”

“Their job was to deliver a load. No one asks questions down there. They do as they’re told.”

“After reviewing all the transactions, thanks to Alexis, it appears that Fielder was the mastermind and everyone else just did his bidding. He was, in fact, the boss.”

“Got it,” Annie replied.

“So, we’re good to go?” Myra said.

“Indeed we are,” Charles answered. “See you soon.” He gave Myra a devilish grin.

Santo Domingo

Alberto Segundo was on his way to the plant when his cell phone beeped. The text message read:

Please report to the school.

In a panic, Segundo pulled over on the side of the road and sent a text back:

Who is this?

The reply was the same:

Please report to the school.

He quickly turned the car around and drove toward his son’s high school. He tried to maintain the speed limit, but he was alarmed by the vague instructions. Nothing like this had ever happened before.

When he arrived at the school, he dashed up the stairs and into the reception area. “¿Qué está mal?”

The secretary looked at him curiously. “Señor Segundo? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I received a text to come to the school immediately,” he said, and showed her his phone.

She shook her head. “That did not come from the school.”

Segundo was as perplexed as she was and said he didn’t understand. The woman shrugged her shoulders and repeated that the message hadn’t come from the school and perhaps it was a mistake. A wrong number. Segundo began to calm down and walked back to his car. As he was about to start the engine his phone rang. Again, an anonymous number. He answered. “Hello?”

“Mr. Segundo. This is Estelle Johnson,” said Alexis.

“Yes, Miss Johnson.” He cleared his throat. “I am running a little late. I received a text from my son’s school, but it was a false alarm.”

“Mr. Segundo, I am about to tell you something, and you must listen carefully and follow my instructions.”

“Please explain what this is all about.” His morning was getting much too peculiar.

“What I am about to tell you may sound like a work of fiction, but I am asking you to trust me.”
