“They both got injured in an explosion.”
“Oh no!” Melanie’s hands flew up to her face. “What happened?”
“Obviously a bomb went off. Cosmo was blinded in one eye, and Kramer is deaf in one ear.”
Melanie sputtered. “Oh, geez. So now I am going to adopt two disabled dogs.”
“I knew you’d say yes.”
“Wait! I didn’t say yes.”
“Yes, you did. You just said, ‘So now I am going to adopt two disabled dogs.’ ”
“That was sarcasm, Mr. Smarty Pants.”
“Mel, please?”
She could see the urging in his eyes. “There’s no place for them to go,” he added in earnest.
“What about you?”
“I signed up for two puppies that were abandoned on the base.”
“You did? When?” Her eyes widened.
“The same day I put your name in for Cosmo and Kramer.”
“What?”
“Since the Air Force is the executive agent for the DOD’s military working dog program, they put up notifications of dogs being retired.”
“Why don’t their handlers take them?”
“They’re on to training new dogs.”
“So, let me see if I’ve got this straight. You put my name on a list for Cosmo and Kramer, and you adopted two puppies.”
“Correct.” He pretended to flinch so she wouldn’t punch him.
“What about the puppies, again?”
“Someone left them outside the base. In a crate.”
“People!”
“At least they left them someplace where they had a good chance of getting a home.”
Melanie huffed. “New job. New house. New roommates.”
“See how easy that was?”
This time, she slapped the back of his arm with the back of her hand. “Ouch!” Again, he was pretending. “I think this deserves a celebration. Do you have any plans for dinner?”
“I do now.” She smiled. “You’re paying.”
“See you soon,” she said to the house as she patted the front door and then scampered to her car.
Gilmour pulled out, and she followed. There was a family-owned Greek restaurant a few blocks away. They were greeted by an older woman who spoke with an accent. Melanie introduced herself. “I just put a bid on a house about a half mile away.”
