“What is it this time?” She exhaled her words.

“There’s chatter about a possible kidnapping.”

“Oh, isn’t that special.” Melanie moaned. “Who, what, where, when, and why?”

“A domestic radical group. A politician’s daughter. North Carolina. Next week on her way home from college. Because they want to show the people that they are being underestimated, disrespected, and are more powerful than we think.”

“What’s the play?” Melanie asked with very little enthusiasm.

“She’s supposed to be going to a holiday party in Miami.”

“And?”

“And someone is supposed to abduct her during her travels.”

“So why not just keep her from going?”

“Because they’ll find something else.”

“Then what’s the point?”

“If this scheme is foiled, the buddies who are supposed to carry out the plan will no longer be accepted members of the group.”

“So they’ll find another bunch of crazies to play with.”

“I don’t think so. If you’re called out because you messed up, no one will want to go near you. You’re spoiled goods.”

“Ah. So we break up these little subversive groups one member at a time?”

“That’s part of it. The other part is that we believe these organizations are being funded by foreign money.”

“Oh!” Melanie pursed her lips. “If the money people lose confidence in the group, their funds will dry up. Very interesting.” Melanie understood the agency’s logic. “When is this happening? Soon, I presume.”

“Yes. The plan will be launched at a political rally at one of the clubs.”

“Please. You’re going to make me throw up.”

“All you have to do is swap the instructions.”

“Swap the what?”

“We know who is supposed to carry out the kidnapping, but we don’t know who is handing off the instructions.”

“Explain, please.”

“A guy named Bennie Wayfair is looking to move up in his band of anarchists. He’s been given the task, but he awaits instructions and information. What we could glean from their private server is that someone will hand Bennie a piece of paper at the rally. Your job is to swap that piece of paper with misinformation.”

“And that will stop the flood of disinformation.”

Gilmour slapped his knee. “You are the brilliant one, aren’t you?”

Melanie made a face. “Yeah. Yeah. And when is this little party happening?”

“Next Saturday.”

“Oh, geez. Okay, but this is the last one. It’s three weeks before Christmas, and I have done absolutely nothing to get ready for the holidays.”

“But just think how merry it will be knowing we thwarted these nasty activities.”
