“Sums what up?” Shannon was still in the dark. “What are you two talking about?”

“We can’t tell you,” Gilmour replied.

“Highly classified,” Melanie added. “Oh, and this thing tonight? It never happened. You went to work. You ran into me. We went to dinner.” Melanie was staring at her.

“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Shannon gave them each a sideways look.

“Yes, Shannon. For real.” Melanie placed her hand on top of Shannon’s and then smiled. “You gotta admit, that was a pretty good stunt we pulled.”

Shannon laughed. “Probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.”

“But you can’t ever tell anyone.” Melanie held up her pinky. “Swear?”

Shannon linked hers around Melanie’s. “Swear.”

Epilogue

Winding Up and Winding Down

Everyone was in holiday overdrive. The kids were bouncing off the walls. The traffic was crazy. People were everywhere. Chaos abounded.

The school was preparing for its annual holiday play, making a valiant attempt to include every widely known religion in song, dance, and decoration. Melanie promised she would do her card tricks for the holiday play, provided everyone was kind and polite. They had a bake sale, and another food drive in keeping with the tradition of giving.

The activities at school put Melanie in the holiday spirit, and she decided to host a party the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Cocktails and appetizers. Shannon took the reins and helped organize the party. She felt it was the least she could do, considering her sister-in-law had probably saved her life.

The guest list consisted of friends from school, family, Patterson and his latest wife, and Gilmour. There would be around thirty people. Shannon ordered a decorated live tree, garland and wreaths, and Christmas vests for Cosmo and Kramer.

The night of the party, the house was shimmering with tea lights and bright shiny things. Giant ornaments hung above the fireplace, and the French doors were adorned with garland wrapped in tiny white lights. It looked like a wonderland while The Nutcracker Suite played softly in the background.

Melanie wore her cream Chanel silk suit with the matching bouclé jacket. This time it was her own hair, her own eyes, and her own nails. She looked stunning. Just for a thrill and a bang, she slipped on her yellow patent leather shoes. Every time she and Shannon looked at each other, they laughed.

The party was a huge success, and Shannon and Melanie prepared goodie bags for everyone, each containing cookies, cheese, pizzelle, nuts, and candy.

Gilmour hung around until the last guest departed. “You need anything else?”

Melanie looked around. Everything was tidy and put away. “There is one thing, though.”

“Sure. What?”

Melanie pointed up to the ceiling. Mistletoe.

Gilmour pulled her close. “I thought you’d never ask.”
