“C’mon, Sheriff, you can tell?—”

“Jill,” he said sharply, cutting her off. “Maybe it’s not the best idea to talk to your supervisor about his romantic life. Remember we talked about acting more professional.”

“I do remember.” Jill was obviously trying to hide her laughter. “So, we shouldn’t talk about your sex life. Got it. Can we talk about mine?”

Jill was an extremely attractive young woman, and he was sure that she had to beat admirers off with a stick. The only reason she hadn’t broken a few hearts in the sheriff’s station was because he forbid dating among his employees.

“No, we cannot. That’s something you should keep to yourself.”

“You need to loosen up, Sheriff. You’re way too uptight,” Jill laughed. “On a more professional note, all the files have been updated. I’ve also fixed the problem with the website. It’s all good to go.”

He hadn’t expected all of those files to be updated in just a week. She’d finished in half the time he’d estimated. Again.

“Thanks, you have a great weekend.”

“I intend to. I have plans.” She waggled her eyebrows in a comical manner. “It sounds like you do as well.”

Grant didn’t reply, simply gathering his keys and wallet and heading out the door with a wave. Frank was more than capable of running things while Grant took a much-needed night off.

He took a quick shower at home, changed his clothes, and headed over to the main resort building. Mia had already sent him a text that she’d checked in. He was as nervous as a teenager on his first date, but he wasn’t upset about it. If anything, he thought it was comical that this slip of a woman could have such an effect on him. He liked that he could still feel like a kid, and he liked that he cared this much for another human being. It had been a long time between serious relationships. This might be their first official date, but this wasn’t a casual thing. His feelings were real, and Mia’s were as well.

Grant entered the lobby, and his oldest brother Ace was finishing up some business at the front desk.

“I heard you reserved one of the rooms for tonight. The family suite is empty.”

Grant loved his brother, and they were close, but he didn’t really want to get into it all with Ace. It was all too new, and too personal.

“It’s a long story, but yes, I did reserve it.”

The great thing about Ace was he didn’t push or pry.

“That’s fine. Your guest is checked in. If there’s anything they need, just let us know.” Ace stepped back, his gaze running over Grant from head to toe. “You look all cleaned up.”

“Mia and I have a date tonight.”

Ace’s face split into a grin, and he slapped Grant on the back.

“That’s wonderful. Excellent. I hope you have a great time.”

Sighing, Grant shook his head.

“Are you worried about your poor, single brother who has no one in his life? You were the same until you met Cassie.”

Ace and Cassie were incredibly happy together, but Grant’s brother had been a single dad for a damn long time until he’d found the one.

“I just want you all to be as happy as I am. You don’t even have a cat. Is it such a crime to want you to find happiness?”

“No, but it’s a little annoying. It’s just a date. Don’t book a church or anything.”

“As a family member, I can assure you that you’d get an excellent deal on a wedding package that includes a cake and flowers.”

For some reason, Ace’s dry tone had Grant laughing all through the elevator ride to Mia’s floor.

He wasn’t going to get his hopes up, but this time it just might be different. This time it might be special. He could fall in love with Mia.

Mia was nervous. Not to the point that she was shaking in her shoes, but the hand that applied her makeup was a bit trembly, and she’d had to wipe a black dot of mascara off her eyelid more than once.
