Page 6 of Winds of Danger

Her cheeks were red and her eyes a little swollen from the tears, but Mia Gamble was obviously a lovely woman with her long blonde hair and big blue eyes fringed with ridiculously thick and dark lashes.

She was tiny, too, which made his gut tighten at the thought that this “person” might have physically hurt her. She was thin…honestly, too thin. A good gust of wind - which they had plenty of at the moment - would have blown her away. She might be a strong and capable woman, but all Grant could think about was that she needed shelter and protection.

“I did look,” she replied. “But I didn’t see it.”

She sounded relieved but exhausted. He didn’t know how long she’d been on the run, but she needed some rest. Hopefully, she’d get it tonight although sleeping through a hurricane wasn’t always the easiest thing to do.

A gust of wind swirled around them, almost knocking them off of their feet. They might be under a cover, but they needed to get inside.

“We need to get out of the weather,” he said. “Let’s get inside and get you settled.”

“Is there room for me? The place must be full.”

She followed him into the entryway where he paused to answer her question.

“I sent my brother a text that I was bringing you. There’s a room for you.”

He didn’t mention that it was usually reserved for the Anderson family. Other people had used it from time to time when they had the need. Mia’s situation certainly qualified.

“Are we going into the lobby?” she asked, her gaze darting all over. “Do I need to check in? I can only pay cash.”

Because she didn’t want her credit cards to be traced. She didn’t say it out loud, but she didn’t have to.

“We’re not accepting money from guests tonight,” he replied. “Don’t worry about it. No one will know that you’re here unless you tell them.”

“I won’t do that.”

She followed him through the break room area and down the hallway where the administrative offices were located. There was no way to get to the room without going through the back part of the lobby, but he could block people’s view.

But first he had to get the key. His brother Ace had said he’d dropped it at the front desk.

“I have to get the key. Do you want to wait here for me? You can go with me if you’d rather.”

At first, he didn’t think she was going to answer, but then she did.

“I’d like to stay with you, please.”

It shouldn’t have mattered to him all that much that this tiny little woman trusted him. Even if it was just a little bit.

It only took a few minutes to get the key from the clerk and hop onto an elevator up to the suite. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, stepping back so she could enter as he switched on a few lights.

Her steps were cautious, her gaze darting around the room, before turning back to him.

“This looks really expensive.”

It was time to come clean.

“This is my family’s suite. We keep it for us or visitors. The Anderson family owns this resort and the land around it.”

“And no one was already staying here?”

“You sound suspicious.”

She was looking at him, her gaze inspecting his face closely. Maybe to see if he was lying?

“If you knew me well, you’d know why I’m a suspicious person.”

“Fair enough, but the room is available. I promise.”
