That was good news for Fuller, not so much for Mia.

“Thanks for the warning,” Grant replied. “I’m hoping Fuller will decide trying to get to Mia is too much work.”

“That’s another thing. Fuller has a new girlfriend. Her name is on the visitor logs, and she sends him mail and packages. I’m not sure how they met, but perhaps he’ll be too busy with her to even think about Mia.”

“I hope you’re right. Fuller out and looking for her is the last thing Mia needs.”

“If he knows that she has people who care around her, and that she won’t put up with his shit anymore, he’ll move onto his next target,” Jason said. “He tried isolating her and that didn’t work. These types of guys don’t want to have to put in any effort. They want to find an easy mark who won’t see them for what they are until it’s too late. I don’t think you’ll hear from him again. But that’s just my opinion.”

“You’re probably correct. Now that Mia’s seen through his mask, he won’t chance it with her again. But I have to make sure.”

“You do,” Jason agreed. “Is everything okay there? Anything else I can help with?”

Quickly, Grant filled Jason in on the incident with Ashley, including the whole psychic saying they were soulmates or something like that.

“I think this just underlines the need to not just look into Mia’s life but your own, too. If these strange incidents started happening when she began dating you, then it might not have anything to do with her. It could be all you.”

“I’m looking at this from all angles, especially after what Ashley did this afternoon.”

“She may have tipped her hand. You know what I always say.”

“Eventually they’ll make a mistake. I’ve always believed that as well.”

They ended the call, and Grant hurried back to the house where Mia was waiting for him. He told her about his call with Jason and what had been said regarding Kevin Fuller.

“That poor woman,” Mia said with a shudder. “She’s probably thinking that he’s wonderful and amazing because he is in the beginning. It’s only later that the other side of him starts to show.”

“She wouldn’t believe you if you warned her,” Grant said. “I’ve seen this play out a hundred times, especially as a prison stint hasn’t deterred her interest. She probably thinks she can change or rehabilitate him.”

“I don’t think he wants to change.”

That was probably the understatement of the year. If it was working for Fuller, he wasn’t going to want to change anything about himself.

“Probably not, but that won’t stop her or someone else from trying. In the meantime, I’m going to look into her and a few other people, namely Fuller’s former cellmate. You said he didn’t have any friends or family left.”

“He had a few friends at the end. They’d hang around as long as he was buying them drinks or paying for dinner. I doubt they would be loyal once he was arrested. What about the guys he robbed houses with?”

“I’ll be checking them out as well, although they’re still inside, too. I’m more concerned with those that are outside.”

“What if he finds out we’re looking into his life? What if it’s not him, but he finds out that we’re investigating him, and he decides that he wants to mess with my life a little bit more?”

Mia sounded nervous at the prospect, and he didn’t blame her. She wanted Fuller far away from her.

“I’m not going to let him anywhere near you.”

“You can’t watch me every hour of every day, Grant, as lovely as that sounds. Eventually we have to work and sleep. This is a serious question. What happens if he finds out?”

“There’s no reason he should be able to find out. When I’m looking into the people in his orbit, I’m not planning to tell them the truth as to why I’m talking to them.”

“What will you tell them?”

“I haven’t nailed down a story yet, but something like I’m asking these questions on behalf of a distant relative who is old and ill and wants to get their affairs in order. Hint around that there might be a will and money. That usually gets people talking quick.”

“You are one diabolical man, Grant Anderson.”

“Thank you. Now how about we go for a walk? I have something I want to show you.”

Holding hands, he led her out onto the property, away from the resort and the hustle and bustle of people. When they walked into the clearing, he heard a swift intake of her breath, and then she looked up at him with a dazzling smile.
