“You’ve been quiet.”

“Did you need me to say anything?” Trey asked with a small smile. “You needed to think. When I want to do that, I like some peace and quiet. Did it help?”

“No, not really. Maybe. I’m not sure.”

“Is this where Mike is?”

“Yes, are you going to tell me that I shouldn’t be here?”

“I wasn’t planning on it. Do you want me to tell you that? Is that something you need to hear?”

“Your brother made it clear that he thinks I’m crazy.”

“I think he’s more worried than anything. He’d do whatever it takes to keep you safe and unharmed. I know my brother, and he’s in love with you, Mia. As in forever and ever, amen. Let’s spend our golden years in rocking chairs. That kind of love.”

Even just hearing about Grant in that way made her heart ache in return. He was everything to her.

“I love him, too. So much. I’m not trying to punish him.”

“He doesn’t think that you are, and not that it matters, I don’t think you are, either. I think you’re scared, confused, and grieving. You’ve been told shocking information about someone you care about. You don’t want to believe it, so your brain has come up with all sorts of reasons why Grant is wrong.”

“Do you think he’s wrong?”

“I think it doesn’t matter what I think. It matters what you think.”

“You should be a politician.”

“Ouch, now that hurts.”

He was smiling though so he hadn’t taken offense.

“I want to ask Mike about what Grant told me. It might be a dumb idea.”

“Do you want me to wait here in the car?”

“Of course, not. You can come in with me. I’ll introduce you to his brother Steve. He’s a great guy. His wife Amy is lovely, too. They’re very welcoming.”

The two of them climbed out of the car and walked up to the front door. Trey hung back so she rang the doorbell. Amy opened the door and waved them in.

“Mia, come on in. And who is your friend?”

“This is Trey Anderson, he’s…”

Her voice trailed off because she wasn’t sure how to describe him. As the brother of the man she loved? That was weird.

“I’m a friend,” Trey said, shaking Amy’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m simply accompanying Mia today. You’ve all been through a lot, and I didn’t want her to be alone.”

“That’s very nice of you,” Amy said. “And yes, we have been through a lot. Lane was a wonderful woman. I was proud to call her my friend. The world is a lesser place for her loss.”

“Mia,” Steve said, joining them in the foyer. “Mike said that you might stop by.”

“He asked me to.”

Scratching at his chin, Steve sighed and shook his head.

“Listen, can we talk first before you go up there to see him? He’s resting in the guest room upstairs, but?—”

“It’s important,” Amy cut in. “We really need to talk to you.”
