“She had no defensive wounds, honey. I don’t think she even knew it was happening. It was all over quickly.”

She nodded, a few silvery tears sliding down her cheek.

“She was my best friend, Grant. I’m not sure I would be standing here with you without her. She helped me so much.”

“I liked her a lot. She was everything that you said she would be. We could do something to honor her if you like. Maybe start a scholarship for a student in her name. Something like that.”

Mia’s smile had his pulse speeding up in response. He loved this woman so much.

“I’d like that.”

“You think about it. I know someone that might be able to help with that. Trey’s pretty smart about financial stuff.”

“You’re pretty smart, too. I’m sorry that I didn’t?—”

“Nope, no apologizing. I don’t blame you for not wanting to believe. Hell, I would have done the same thing if you’d said it about my brothers.”

“I should have believed you. You’ve never given me any reason not to trust you.”

“And I hope I never do. I love you. And I love that I’m going to get to see you in my home every day. I can’t wait for us to make a life together.”

“You are such a romantic.” Mia’s arms slid around his middle before placing her cheek on his chest. Right above the heart that beat for her. “I love you, Grant. I want to make that life with you, too. I want to make a fresh start. Again.”

“The future is bright, sweetheart. I promise you.”

He was a man that kept his promises.
