Lena smiled in spite of her foul mood. “Oh, yes, there was definitely romance.”

“Just in bed or always?”

Lena flushed hearing her grandmother ask about sex, but they had a baby together, so there was no doubt they’d been having sex. “Always,” she said softly. “He was so sweet, so tender and thoughtful… always holding my hand, stroking my hair, buying me little presents, doing odd jobs around the apartment for Sophia and I. Up until that trip to San Francisco, everything was wonderful. Perfect.”

“Then why didn’t you trust him enough to tell him about what his mother had done?”

Lena felt the now familiar wash of shame and squeezed her eyes shut. “I don’t know. I thought a smart American who was so talented—he was going to be successful, I already knew that—would never side with a simple girl like me over his family. And he would never move to Greece, right? An unplanned pregnancy just made me look desperate—”

“You were a foolish girl, and he was a clueless man, but now there’s a little boy who’s going to be very confused. This is what you must think about first! You and Mikos aren’t so young anymore—it’s time to behave like adults and do the right things. And maybe, if you listen to an old woman, you might get back the man you love.”

“Yaya…” Lena groaned. “You just told me to grow up and in the same breath told me to indulge in a foolish romantic fantasy!”

“True love is never foolish.”

“Even if he’s the love of my life,” Lena whispered, “how would you know that he loves me too?”

“We spent time together at the wedding,” she said. “I saw the way he looked at you—even though he tried to hide it. I saw how he watched, his eyes always following you when he thought no one was looking. I saw, Melina, and I know. If you want him back, you must trust me.”

“Trust you how?”

“I’m going to tell you exactly what to do to win him back.”

Apollo and Paige arrived early in the afternoon the following day and Mick had never been so reluctant to talk to his closest friend.

“I really appreciate you dropping everything to come,” Mick said quietly, shaking his friend’s hand after he’d hugged Paige.

“I wanted to bring Paige to Santorini anyway,” Apollo said, smiling over at his wife. “So accomplishing that while seeing my best friend makes it that much better.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t know how much you’re going to like what I have to tell you,” Mick muttered. “What I have to talk to you about isn’t work-related.”

Apollo gave him a look. “This has to do with Lena, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah.”

Apollo’s eyes widened as if a light bulb went off inside his head, but instead of saying anything, he merely nodded and turned to his wife. “Shall we go straight to the villa and you can spend time with Raegan while Mick and I talk? We can check in to the hotel later?”

“Of course.” She nodded quickly. “Whatever you want to do.”

They’d just gotten on the road when Apollo suddenly spoke. “Mick?”

“Yeah?” Mick stared at the road in front of him.

“Lena is Mihalis’ mother and you’re his father, aren’t you?”

Mick tightened his grip on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white, slowly nodding. “It appears that way.”

“It appears that way? You mean you don’t know?” Apollo sounded annoyed.

Mick could count on one hand how many times Apollo had lost his temper with him so this was uncomfortable, if not to be expected. “I haven’t exactly had time to get a paternity test,” he growled.

“Did you suspect?”

“Until a couple of days ago, no, I didn’t suspect anything.” Mick cut a glance at his friend. “I’m sorry, man. I fell in love with her and was trying to figure out how to tell you I wanted to marry her when she dumped me. I had no idea she was pregnant, no idea what I’d done to upset her, no idea about anything. And now out of the blue she announces her nephew is really her son, her brother-in-law was never the father, and my mother is a conniving bitch.”

“Obviously there’s a lot more to this story.”
