The doorbell rang and Mick glanced in that direction. “Are we expecting anyone?”

“I don’t think so,” Lena frowned. “Apollo wouldn’t be up this early.”

The doorbell rang three more times in a row, followed by a loud pounding.

“What the hell?” Mick walked in that direction.

Mick opened the door and managed to duck when Loren swung at him. He stepped back and scowled, pushing the smaller man away from the entrance.

“You arrogant piece of shit!” Loren was yelling. “You got me fired? You got my own uncle to fire me?! You and your fucking whore.”

“Watch your mouth,” Mick growled, narrowing his eyes dangerously. “You did this to yourself. Had nothing to do with me.”

“Bullshit!” Loren’s looked like he hadn’t slept, his clothes unkempt, eyes bloodshot and hair sticking up.

“Then why didn’t you answer your phone?” Mick demanded.

“I’m not on duty 24/7!” Loren yelled back.

“Neither am I, but I answer my phone.”

“Fuck you.” Loren swung again but Mick was too fast for him, moving out of his reach.

“You need to go sleep this off,” Mick muttered.

“Why? Uncle Pat is sending me home and it’s your fucking fault! You’re just trying to throw suspicion off yourself and onto me so your dad won’t find out you’re fucking that bimbo again.”

“Watch your mouth!” Mick smacked him with the back of his hand. “You don’t talk about her like that.”

“Your dad is going to kick you to the curb,” Loren grunted. “Don’t you see? He’s looking for any excuse to see you fail… you’re a fucking pansy, giving up everything for a piece of ass.”

This time Mick used his fist and blood spurted from Loren’s nose. Loren just laughed, though, holding his hand against it. “The only good thing about all of this is that you’re going down with this stupid project and I won’t to be part of it.”

“Fuck you.” Mick shoved him further down the walk. “Get out of here, Loren, and stay off the job site.” He shut the door and pulled out his phone, dialing Pat’s number.

“Mornin’, Mick.”

“Loren just showed up looking for a fight, said it’s my fault you fired him.”

“Sorry about that,” Pat sighed. “I waited for him at his hotel last night. He didn’t get home until a few hours ago, half-drunk, stumbling around like a lunatic. We had a talk and I told him it was time to go home to San Francisco, reassess his life. I’m sorry he tried to take it out on you.”

“I can take care of myself, but he was talking about my dad wanting the project to fail and I’m not sure what that’s about.”

Pat was quiet. “I’m not sure either but I’ll see what I can find out. Take the day off, relax. I’ll let you know if we get any information.” He disconnected, leaving Mick totally out of sorts.

Why did it suddenly feel like everyone wanted this project to fail and he was the only one who didn’t know what was going on?

Mick had a million things happening at once and Lena watched him worriedly, wondering if she was adding to his already stressful situation. Being together again was incredible, but the obstacles facing them felt insurmountable today. His family, his job, telling the rest of her family what was going on, getting legal custody of Mihalis, and now this nonsense with Loren. It was eerily similar to how things had been the first time they’d broken up: worrying about his family, her family, his job, the baby, and school. She didn’t have a ring then, though, and she’d felt very alone. This time, she had Mick at her side and despite everything being up in the air, she’d promised herself to give Mick a chance to prove himself. She’d allowed herself to believe he would let her down in the past and that wasn’t an option this time. This time, Mihalis was involved and she refused to believe Mick would do anything to hurt either of them.

“I think we need to go to Athens,” Mick said, startling her back to the present. “We need papers drawn up by an attorney if we want Giorgios and Sophia to give up custody and we need to see if there’s a laboratory that can do expedited paternity testing. If not, we’ll have to send it to London or New York.”

She nodded. “Do you want to fly or take the ferry? I think the high-speed ferry is less of a hassle and it’ll drop us in Piraeus, which is close to home.”

“Whatever you think. I’ll give you my credit card and you can make the arrangements.”

“We’re going to have to talk to my parents, too. They still don’t know everything.”

“Of course.” He paused. “I think we should just get married, Lena. Why wait? Is it a hassle in Greece? I don’t know how it works.”
