I gasp and squeeze my eyes shut. I thrust into my palm and use her thigh to steady myself. Warm liquid covers my hand, and I groan, months of tension finally leaving my body.

Neither one of us says anything for a handful of minutes, and when I lift my chin, she’s smiling at me.

“Dallas,” she says, and I move for her.

I wipe my hand on my jersey, not caring about the mess. I kiss her roughly and sigh when she wraps her arms around me and pulls me close.

“You okay?” I ask against her mouth, and she nods.

“Nothing about you could ever be considered just okay, and that includes the aftermath of what you did to me. I’m on top of the world.”

I blush and kiss her neck. “Such an ego inflater.”

“Can I stay in here with you tonight?” Maven asks.

The responsible thing to do would be to head back to the hotel. After lying about a headache, I know someone’s going to be checking on me at the crack of dawn, but I don’t want to leave her. Not when she looks up at me with hopeful eyes.

“You can stay in here every night,” I say. “I do need to get up early and try to sneak back into the hotel before our team breakfast, but I won’t leave without saying goodbye.”

“Okay.” She runs her hand down my back and settles her palm between my shoulders. “You’re my favorite person in the world. Did you know that?”

“I had a feeling. Only because you’re mine, too.”

“Shower then bed?”

“Good idea. I should try to get some sleep. With you next to me, though, I doubt that’ll happen.”

“I’ll behave. You have a big game tomorrow, and I don’t want to be the reason you lose.”

I laugh. “If we win, though, we’re going to have to do that before every game. I might have found my new favorite meal.”

Maven grins and drags me to the bathroom. Something in me pulls tight at the intimacy of the moment, and I start to wonder if this could be a forever kind of thing.

THIRTY-FOUR

MAVEN

The first hintsof sunrise are only just beginning to sneak through the curtains when I open my eyes. I see the muted grays and dull whites, and I bury my face into the warm mass beside me, not ready to start the day.

“Morning,” Dallas says, and his voice is rusty with exhaustion.

“Already?” I groan, and I huff out a sigh against his chest.

“That’s how the calendar works.” He drops a kiss to my forehead and wraps his arms around my waist. “How’d you sleep?”

“Did we even sleep? It feels like I just closed my eyes,” I grumble, and untangle myself from the mess of limbs and wrinkled sheets. “What time is it?”

“Too early, but I need to start getting ready. The team breakfast is at eight, and I can’t have anyone finding out I didn’t sleep at the hotel. You can go back to sleep, though. June should sleep for a while.”

“What happens if you don’t sleep in the hotel? Does the principal put you in detention?”

His laugh is deep and rumbly, and he squeezes me tight. “No, but Shawn could bench me. I haven’t missed a game since I entered the league, and I’d like to keep that streak going.”

“Such a rule follower. Is there any streak or record you don’t have?” I ask, and push up on my elbow.

My heart lodges itself in my throat when I look down at him, and I have to swallow down the sensation that settles in my chest when his gaze meets mine. Dallas was sexy last night with his rough words and heated eyes. A man of desire and need finally taking what he wants.

He’s terribly beautiful in the light of day, with soft edges and gentle touches. Wild, messy hair and a crease on his cheek from his pillow. His neck is covered in the pink marks I left behind after our shower last night, and I want to connect them all to see what I could draw.
