How’s your day?

June is down for a nap, and I just realized how quiet the apartment is without you here.

There aren’t any tornadoes whipping around me.

Me

Is that your way of telling me you miss me?

Dallas

A bit, yeah.

Who knew I’d be a fan of chaos?

Me

I’m at my dad’s and eating the world’s best grilled cheese. I’ll be back later.

Dallas

Enjoy your afternoon. I just wanted to say hi.

Me

Hi, lone star.

Dallas

Hi, sunshine.

I’ll let you go. Catch you on the flip side, roomie.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen you smile like that before,” Maggie says, quietly enough for only me to hear.

“I’m not smiling,” I say.

“That’s your second lie of the afternoon. Are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

“Everything’s fine. I’m…” I trail off, knowing I can’t tell her, even if I want to. “Things are just good.”

She hums in understanding and doesn’t press any further, turning her focus back to her lunch. “Good. I like seeing you smile.”

With everyone distracted, I read Dallas’s text messages again, and my heart skips a beat when I realize I miss him, too.

TWENTY-ONE

MAVEN

“Do you have her snacks?”

“Yup. Extra Goldfish, too, because I know they’re her favorite,” I answer.

“And a change of clothes for when you land? In case the luggage gets lost?”

“Check. With a different pair of shoes in the unlikely event her favorite sneakers start to hurt her feet.”

“What about a jacket? Her hat and gloves? Shit, do you think she needs boots?” he asks.
