I pull on my jacket and throw some cash on the table. “I love y’all. Thanks for being in my corner.”

“Always.” Reid puts his hand over his heart and sighs. “Look at our boy growing up. Let us know how it goes.”

“We want to know every single detail,” Maverick says with a sly grin.

“No, we really don’t,” Reid practically begs.

“Fuck off,” I laugh, and I make my way outside, ready to be home with her.

Gettinga rideshare on a Saturday night is nearly impossible.

Two drivers cancel on me, and by the time I pull up to my building, it’s been over an hour since I left the restaurant.

June’s definitely asleep, but I know Maven will be awake. I don’t know if I should give her a heads up that I’m coming up or just surprise her.

I think if I text her, I might lose all the momentum I have.

The ride up to my floor is unbearably long, and when I’m finally standing outside my door, I take a deep breath.

I slip inside as quietly as I can and kick off my sneakers. The sound of the television in the living room echoes down the hall, and I follow the noise. I stand in the entryway and see Maven on the couch.

Her phone is in her hand and her bottom lip is caught between her teeth. It looks like she’s thinking hard about something, but before I have time to wonder what it is, my phone buzzes twice in my pocket. I pull it out and find messages from her on my screen.

Maven

Hi. I hope the hotel is fun. The apartment is always so lonely when you aren’t around.

Can you hurry home, please?

I love that she calls my place home, and I type out a quick reply.

Me

Hey, sunshine.

Kind of sounds like you miss me.

I watch her reaction, and I feel victorious when she smiles and answers right away.

Maven

Only a little bit. Don’t flatter yourself.

“Just a little bit?” I ask.

Her phone goes flying. She lets out a noise that’s somewhere between a screech and a squeal, and I double over laughing when a shoe comes flying at my head.

“What thefuck?Dallas?” Maven clutches her chest and stares at me like an ax might be coming for my head next. “Are you insane? Who the hell sneaks up on a woman alone in an apartment you absolute asshat? You’re lucky I put my dinner knife away, or that pretty face of yours would be all marked up.”

“You think I’m pretty?”

“Fuck you. You almost gave me a heart attack, and it’s a miracle you didn’t wake up JB.”

I clutch my side and wheeze. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think that through. I was trying to be romantic, and it came off as incredibly serial-killery.”

“Uh, yeah. I feel like you might rival Ted Bundy with that entrance.” She pulls the blankets off her legs and stalks toward me with her hands on her hips and the cutest angry face I’ve ever seen. “What are you doing here?”

When she gets close enough to reach, I grab her arm and tug her toward me. Her chest presses against mine, and I cup her cheek with my palm.
