Eew. That man’s attitude. I knew I stated the obvious, but he didn’t have to be a butthead. If I had my phone, I would have had some light. Unfortunately, I left it on charge upstairs.

“Here.”

It was like being touched by an icicle when he grabbed my arm. I flinched, and the mop clattered to the floor. “Your hands are freezing.”

“Sorry,” he murmured.

When his phone’s flashlight beamed straight into my eyes, I held up my hand to shield them.

Hudson moved the light in a different direction and said, “You can have the couch. I’ll sleep on the recliner.”

I walked behind him.

“Uh.” He stopped and turned around at my voice, the light hitting my poor eyelids again. “Do you mind?”

At that point, I was positive he was doing it on purpose.

He grunted, and I hesitated before asking, “Do you care if I use your phone to walk up and grab my Kindle, phone, and blanket?”

Hudson handed over his device. As soon as I moved toward the stairs, I was met with resistance on my legs. Max was right in front of me, and I didn’t notice. I gasped. My arms shot out in front of me. Hudson grabbed my forearm and pulled me back.

He sighed and said, “How about I walk with you?”

Was he kidding me? My face felt like it might melt right off as I huffed. “Sure, yeah. If you’re afraid of the dark, you can tell me.”

Another grunt.

He snatched his phone and aimed the light at my face again.

I shielded my eyes with my hand. “Would you stop that?”

“I’m afraid of the dark, right? I need to see your face to know I’m not alone.”

I snorted because he said it with such a straight face. “Do you want to hold hands, too?”

“Yeah. That’d be best.” The man took my hand in his, and I gawked.

He pointed the flashlight toward the floor.

I grew more and more flustered as my heart rate quadrupled. “I was joking.”

“Look. See how nothing is in front of us.” He waved the light around, showcasing the floor. “There’s nothing for you to trip over.”

Oh,oh!I understood exactly why he held my hand like a child. When I tried yanking my hand away from his death grip, I couldn’t. The embarrassment burned my face. “Your dog almost tripped me.”

“Right, but I’d rather not have to drive in this weather tonight.”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

“I’m worried you’ll find a way to fall off the second-floor banister and break something. No ER trips tonight, okay?”

“Oh, my God. You’re being ridiculous. I can walk fine on my own.”

I pushed his phone toward his face to see his expression. My eyes widened as I saw the corners of his mouth stretch upward. Was Hudson smiling? I didn’t realize my position put us chest-to-chest until I breathed in his cologne. Inhaling sharply, I stepped out of his personal space.

The fancy-ass rich dude smelled so good.

Hudson pointed the phone back toward the floor. “I’ve seenyourwalk for two days now. I’m not so sure.”
