“I believe it,” Roger added.

Hudson said, “I don’t know. Red isn’t picky about her food, so she might not be the best judge.”

His smoky eyes were hooded as he watched me.Still?I squeezed my thighs together.

“Hey,” I said, swallowing nervously. “I know good food from bad.”

“Speaking of red…” Holly pointed at my hair. “If Hudson wants to keep calling you Red, we need to redo your hair. Luckily for you, I brought the dye for you. I can get it done before I leave tomorrow.”

I reached out for her across the table, thankful for the distraction. “You are a beautiful soul. Did I tell you how stunning you look?”

Holly lunged forward and grabbed my hands. “No, but you can right now.” When she winked, Roger groaned, and we laughed.

???

I didn’t know which was worse. The constant creaking of the bed or the steady thud of the headboard hitting the wall. Throwing the pillow over my head, my feet started bouncing in tune with Holly and Roger’s screwing in the room beside mine.

“Right there! Rightthere!” Holly moaned.

Oh my God! I groaned and shot out of bed. My hair was still wet from the shower and clung to the back of my shirt.

It wasn’t the first time I’d heard the woman get it on with a man before. Long ago, I found it amusing. The cabin was so quiet at night. If I could hear them, I feared Hudson did too. How embarrassing!

Even so, I laughed. I wished I had my best friend’s confidence. She genuinely seemed to enjoy sex. Me? I liked theideaof it. In reality, the act was lackluster for me. I didn’t know if it was because I stayed in my head too much or because men just sucked, but it had always been a struggle to reach a climax with any of my partners. When I was alone with my vibrator, that was a different story. It was fabulous, and so much more enjoyable than having a man with me.

Unexpectedly, I imagined how Hudson might be between the sheets. My thoughts froze. There was no reason I should be going down that road, but the thuds hitting the wall had my brain a fucking mess. He was a very attentive person. Something about the way he took care of those around him made me think he’d probably be an incredible lover. He’d likely know how to meet a woman’s needs.

I thought of the way he was practically devouring me with his eyes at the table. Had I imagined that heated look? My toes curled as my clit throbbed.Stop it,I told myself. If I kept going down the slippery slope of thoughts for Hudson, there would be no going back. I’d obsess over it.

I wiped my brow and inhaled deeply. Reading would be good. Anything to take my mind off the wicked thoughts I had. I grabbed my Kindle and headphones. Slowly, I opened my bedroom door and tiptoed downstairs. Yeah. I could still hear them, so I hoped Hudson was sleeping heavily.

There was no cozy fire to sit by, and I’d already taken the tree down, but I’d make do with the couch. Once I picked out a playlist that matched the mood of my book, I began reading. I wasn’t there for a couple minutes when the cushion dipped beside me and one of my earbuds was yanked out.

I looked over at Hudson. The light off my Kindle was the only reason I could make out his features.

“Hudson…” I was about to ask what he was doing awake when Holly moaned again. Trying hard not to smile and feeling my cheeks heat, I said, “I’m sorry about this.”

He cocked his head slowly. “No, you’re not.”

I laughed and pointed at the earbud still in his fingers. “I’m trying to drown them out.”

“You started smiling as soon as your friend moaned. Why is your face so red, Red?”

“What?” My mouth dropped. “Don’t you know people laugh and smile when they’re feeling awkward or embarrassed. It’s very uncomfortable to be sitting here with you while they’re up there bringing down the house. So, I’m going back upstairs. Give me back my earbud.”

“I’m teasing you.” He smirked. “Stay down here and read.”

I huffed just when Holly cried out. Looking upstairs, I groaned and fought the urge to hide my face from Hudson. “Still going? Ain’t no way.”

The bed hitting the wall said otherwise.

“Oh?” There was humor in that one word. “It could be the second round.”

“Hmm,” I mumbled. “I hope your wall is okay.”

Hudson burst out laughing.

“I can’t believe they aren’t being quiet in someone else’s house,” I went on. “She’s going to be so proud of herself tomorrow when I tell her.”
