She placed her arms over her chest, which caused her breasts to push upward. Even with the new uniform shirt she wore, her shape couldn’t be mistaken. “What did you say to table eight?” she asked.

I scratched my ear. “What do you mean?”

“You approached his booth and called him Jeremiah, so you know him. I also know you said or did something because he left before he even ordered more than a drink. The man always leaves a tip, and I didn’t get one.”

Good. Jeremiah understood me. “It’s probably because he left before he ordered food.”

“Why did he leave?”

“He had bad intentions for you.”

She threw up her hands. “Most men don’t have good intentions. Show me one with my best interest at heart, and I’d be—”

“Me. I have the best intentions when it comes to you.”

I could love the shit out of her. The woman who showed me how much I could care about someone other than my own wants.

She lowered her hands, a blush taking over her cheeks as she averted her gaze.

I crossed my arms. “He knew your nickname.”

She scoffed and pointed at her nametag. “Genie is on my nametag. Besides, I greet all my customers by introducing myself.”

That made sense since he didn’t know her name was Eugene. I still didn’t like the idea of him flirting with her. “I don’t like him, or any man, calling you that. Maybe we should remove your nametag altogether.”

“What?”

I swept my gaze over her as I frowned. “Would ma’am work best for our customers? No. Actually, some young punk might enjoy saying that.”

“Hudson!”

My eyes widened when I realized what I said. Holy shit. She was going to figure out I was planning our wedding if I didn’t ease up. Still, I cleared my throat and went back to Jeremiah. “Jeremiah’s not a bad guy, but he would have pushed for your number or something else.”

She eyed me up and down. “And I could have told him no if he asked.”

“You’re right.” I grinned, not ashamed in the least, about what I did. “But I didn’t like the way he was looking at you when I saw him.”

Her nose crinkled. “How was he looking at me?”

There was no way I was going to explain what I saw in that man’s gaze. “Tell me when another man flirts with you because I don’t want you uncomfortable.”

“I know you try hard to be my knight in shining armor since I’ve moved in. Honestly, my life has been easier since I moved to Senkins. I’ll never be able to thank you enough for offering me a home and a job, but I’m so glad you did. You can put away the cape, though, because nothing terrible has happened. I rarely deal with rude customers.” She smiled, and that small reward had me feeling like I was on cloud nine.

When I saw my desk behind her, my thoughts spiraled.I could lift her up, spread her out, and yank those pants down. Show how good I could make her feel. Show her how well I could take care of her. Orthe wall… I could pin her to it, shove my hand down her pants, and rewardherfor gifting me with one of her smiles. She held those hostages from me lately. My patience was splintering. I could be so good to Eugene, and I fucking would, but damn, I was ready to devour her. I swallowed down those thoughts and lost myself in those pretty brown eyes instead. I could behave a little longer.

“I’m always going to take care of you, Red,” I said truthfully. I would take really good care of her when I finally got my hands on her.

Her smile waned as she looked at the floor. “I’m going to head back to the front.”

Why did she seem so sad? My words were meant to reassure, but they seemed to do the opposite.

THIRTY-TWO

EUGENE

On my day off, I was surfing the Net when an unknown number called. My heart felt like it had dropped to my feet, thinking it might be the police finally calling me about Danny. They didn’t believe me when I said I didn’t know anything. I would pay for his wrongs instead of him.

Swallowing nervously, I answered. “Hello?”
