I stepped out of the dressing room, so Kelly and Sue could see the green dress. The hideous gown hid what little curves I had, but they wanted to see the garment on me.

Sue flinched as soon as she saw me. “Oh, good Lord. That’s dreadful.”

“Grandma.” Kelly laughed. “It’s… something.”

I smiled. “You’re completely right, Sue. It’s ugly, andyoumade me try it on. You knew it looked awful on the rack, too.”

She tossed her hand up. “I thought it would look good with your wild hair, but instead ya kind of look like a watermelon.”

“Oh, dear. She’s right.” Kelly placed her fingers on her chin. “Try on the blue one!”

I loved that Hudson’s mom had only met me a couple hours ago and didn’t mind telling me what to do either. It must run in the family since it killed her son to see me walk or keep my hair wet. I smiled and tried on the next dress.

I stepped out of the stall and spun around for them.

Sue shook her head. “No. Just no.”

“Here. How about this one?” Kelly asked.

When I saw the simple black dress in her hand, I reached for it. “I’ll try this one next.”

It wasn’t as simple as I thought, though. Once I put it on, I saw that there was no back piece. The strap wrapped around my neck, and the material was loose, plunging between my breasts. I kept my bra on for the try-on, but I’d have to go without one for a dress like that. I studied myself in the mirror. The gown hugged my hips nicely.

I stepped out and turned for them.

“Now, we’re getting somewhere.” Sue nodded. “It’s almost like we want to seduce someone.”

“Who are we seducing?” I asked. “Do you have another single grandson or someone?”

“I do. Hudson’s brother, Finnick, will be there. You’ll like him. He’s funnier than his brother.”

I mock gasped. “Just wait until I tell Hudson.”

Sue smiled. “Tell Hudson what?”

My body heated as I realized what I had said. Tell Hudson what exactly? Why would he care if his grandma was trying to set me up with her other grandchild? Why did I have such an absurd thought?

“Hudson said we were going together,” I said. “Notlike that, so stop smiling. I’m just saying I can’t abandon him like that. He already promised to stick with little awkward me at the event since you forced this upon me.”

Kelly narrowed her eyes at Sue. “You said she wanted to attend.”

Ignoring Kelly, Sue smirked. “Ya called Hudson as soon as we got off the phone.”

“Well, yeah—”

“That’s good, right, Kelly?” Sue glanced at her daughter-in-law. “I’m sure Hilary will be there. I bet they haven’t spoken since they broke up.”

“Hilary?” I asked.

Hudson had an ex that would be there. Suddenly, my stomach cramped.

“Grandma.” Kelly crossed her arms. “Those two broke up on peaceful terms. Don’t be starting stuff to get your way.”

Sue shrugged. “I’m not doing anything.”

“Hilary likely won’t be there,” said Kelly. “So, don’t worry.”

“Oh, that’s none of my business,” I said far too quickly, and then pointed to Sue. “Despite what this one says, I’m not dating Hudson.” The words felt so awful leaving my mouth that I coughed, but it was the truth. “But… I do think he’s my best friend, so I do want what’s best for him.”
