He smacked my ass lightly, and I squeezed my butt cheeks together. “Go wash up, beautiful, so I can get that hair dry.”

“Okay, okay.”

I shivered when he pressed a kiss on my ass. Jumping out of bed quickly, I dashed to the bathroom, closed the door, and freshened up. When I opened it, he patted the spot in front of him. Warm tingles spread over me as I sat in front of him.

I was positive that nothing could be better than spending every moment with Hudson.

Coughing a few times, he turned on the blow-dryer and played with my hair.

???

I awakened in a dark room. A heavy arm was draped over my middle, and hot breath blew into my nape. Hudson held my hips snug against his. How did that happen? Did I fall asleep? Of course, I fell asleep while he played with my hair, especially after he gave me the most delicious orgasms.

Why did he keep letting me sleep in there? He couldn’t be… Was he intentionally allowing me to sleep in his bed? As soon as the thought took root, my heart raced. What were we doing? If I hadn’t been living under his roof, if I wasn’t so paranoid ofwhyhe took care of me, I would have asked him. Did his heart pitter patter out of control when we kissed? What about when we were together? Did everything feel perfect and sweet, like coming home?

Or was I the only one who felt happiness when we were together. Was I setting myself up for heartbreak?

God. I’d never felt so consumed by someone who I was dying to know their thoughts but terrified at the same time.

But if I left him alone in that bed, would he find another reason to get me back into it?

The idea had me twisting out from beneath Hudson. Slipping upstairs, I was hoping, wishing, and waiting for what he would do next.

THIRTY-EIGHT

EUGENE

I was up before Hudson. That rarely happened. Most of the time, he’d already left for work. As I stumbled down the stairs, I saw him slipping on his boots. He swayed, nearly smacking into the wall, before he righted himself, and then grunted. Flinching, I hurried over. “Are you okay?”

He grunted again, rubbing his head. Did he have a headache? When his greenish-brown orbs met my gaze, he pouted, his brows pinching in the middle. “Where did you go?”

I crinkled my nose. It took me a second to realize he must have meant when I left his bed again. “I went to sleep in my room,” I admitted.

He rubbed his forehead, rising to his full height. “Always leaving.”

I couldn’t help but notice how pale he looked. Hudson had dark circles under his eyes. Most days, he rarely left the stubble on his jaws. I thought he looked yummy with it, but I’d learned that Hudson liked to be immaculate in appearance. He was always grumpy, but normally he had a pep to his step in the mornings.

“Are you feeling, okay?” I asked.

“I’d feel better if I had awakened beside you.”

I averted my gaze as my heart pitter-pattered out of control. “Are you sure you’re all, right? You look pale.”

When I turned my attention back to him, he shrugged before coughing and rubbing his chest. “Just a little under the weather…”

My heart pinched as he coughed again. Reaching out, I placed my palm on his forehead. He felt hot, but I couldn’t be sure. “You’re warm. Do you have a thermometer?”

He shook his head.

“You’re sick.” I pulled at the jacket he had on.

“I don’t get sick.”

I snorted and yanked when he wasn’t helping me take the garment off. “You can’t go to work.”

“I can’t miss work.”

That made me chuckle because I’d noticed him leaving work early more and more. “Yes, you can. You’re the owner. Besides, I need to check your temp. If you have a fever, you can’t go spreading your germs everywhere.”
