The man was beautiful.

I might not have the full picture, but what I could see of him was absolutely devastating. And the way his broad shoulders shook with his laughter had my hands twitching with the urge to reach out and run them over the wide expanse, feeling the muscles beneath them like I had when we’d kissed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked, snapping out of it.

“Nothin’, go on.”

I narrowed my eyes. “As I was sayin’, we don’t even know each other. How could you possibly know it’s somethin’ you want to last?”

He shrugged, setting his own plate aside. “Call it a gut instinct. Shoot, I don’t care what you call it, but I don’t have to know much about you to know that kiss out there was somethin’ worth doin’ again.”

“I won’t disagree with that,” I said with a playful smile. “But there’s plenty of night left.”

The mystery man nodded, slowly turning his head back toward the party as he did so. “Busy, huh?”

“Yep.”

“I’m pretty busy myself.”

“I bet you are.”

He pursed his lips. “And I know a thing or two about responsibilities.”

“I don’t doubt it.”

“I also know a thing or two about bein’ scared to take a leap because you’re not sure if you’ll land on your feet or if you’ll break every bone in your body.”

When he looked at me, he grinned at whatever he saw in my expression. I didn’t know what I was projecting, exactly, but I knew it irked me that he found whatever it was so amusing.

“Hmm, struck a chord, there?” he asked.

“Ooh, a guitar reference. I still have money on you bein’ a country singer,” I said flatly, brushing away some cracker crumbs from the folds of my crimson skirt.

“Uh-huh. Definitely scared.”

“I’m not scared,” I huffed out. “I’m strategic.”

“Strategic?”

“Yes. I don’t have time for detours right now, okay? Especially not ones that could lead me right off a cliff.”

He studied me for a long moment, then sighed. “Well, since you’re lookin’ at me kinda like you wanna throw me off a cliff right now?—”

“Not a bad idea…” I laughed reluctantly as he gently elbowed me in the side.

“I’ll tell ya what. I’ll drop this whole thing for now, but do me a favor, will ya?”

I tucked my lips between my teeth, then nodded.

“Take out your phone.”

Doing as he asked, I removed my phone from the pocket of my dress. “Now what?”

“Now, create a new contact and put my number in there. I won’t ask for yours in return, but I just don’t wanna leave thisparty without givin’ you some way to get ahold of me. Never know when it’ll come in handy.”

“Fine,” I relented, a thrill shooting through me even though I told myself I’d never use the number. “What’s your number?”

He gave it to me, then leaned over and pointed at the screen where the name would go. “You can put whatever you want. I won’t spoil the fun and give you my name. Put Blue—though I still don’t get how I earned that nickname since I’m wearin’ all black.”
