I meant what I said in the kitchen that day. Grunge sounds better on tape. But I was starting to buy my favorite albums on disc when I saw them.

He bends down and rummages through the stack of discs, and when he doesn’t find anything suitable, stands back up and returns his attention to the tapes.

“Ah-ha,” he says triumphantly, holding one over his head. “Success!”

He pops a tape into the deck and when I hear Def Leppard’s “Gods of War” start to play, I can’t help but snort. “Fitting.”

He makes his way back over to the bed and plops down next to me, flashing me that sexy grin of his that always makes my stomach flip. “I thought so.”

While we hadn’t come up with much yet, one thing was clear—the case against my father didn’t look weak. In fact, it looked like a slam dunk, with a potential nail in the coffin being years of bank statements for an offshore account allegedly belonging to him, with repeated deposits from a bank account belonging to the Petrov Syndicate.

I didn’t know anything about Daddy’s finances, so couldn’t confirm the account. But I couldn’t help but feel we were fighting a war someone else started so yeah, it was a perfect song.

“So…” Cruz brushes my hair off one shoulder, skimming my shoulder with his fingertips. “Want to order a pizza and pull an all-nighter?”

The way he’s looking at me, the meaning is clear. “If that’s how you study at Highland, I’m surprised you haven’t flunked out yet.”

“That may be how the guys study,” he shrugs, “but not me.I’m all about the library.”

“Kind of cliche, don’t you think?”

“Sex against the stacks?” he tosses back easily. “Not at all.”

My eyes whip up and he winks. “Gotcha.”

When I forgave Cruz, I let go of the fact he’d slept around. Still, jealousy could be a bitch, and I didn’t like the idea of him doing things with other girls that we’d never done.

I look back down at the paper in my hand, pretending to study its contents. “So you’ve never had sex in a library before?”

“Nope,” he confesses. “Have I wanted to though? Hell yes. Nailing you between Chaucer and Dickens was one of my top five wet dreams in high school.”

A rush of heat shoots up my spine and I can’t fight the smile his confession elicits.

“And the other four?” I ask casually, keeping my eyes on the paper in my hand, trying to maintain my composure.

He runs a finger under my chin and tips my face up, looking into my eyes. “We checked those off the list a few summers ago.”

Fuck, he wasn’t playing around tonight. “Cruz…”

“What?” He drops his hand. “Isn’t this what we’re supposed to be doing…letting what we feel run its course so we can let go and be friends?”

I swallow down the way the word makes me feel. “Telling me you wanted to have sex with me in the library at Elmhurst isn’t letting things run their course and paving a road to friendship. That’s teasing.”

“I wasn’t talking about Elmhurst,” he winks. “I was talking about the library at home. After school, when no one was around…” He shakes his head and blows out a heated breath. “Senior year, I must have dreamed about it at least a hundred times. Lifting that cute little uniform skirt up and fucking you right there against the shelves among the smell of leather and old books. Damn,” his eyes flash, “makes me hard just thinkingabout it.”

“Okay.” I set the paper in my hand down. If he wants to play this game, then we’re going to play. “Do you know what one of my top fives was?”

“Fuck yes.” He sits up straighter.

“You, me, and a third.”

“What?” His smile fades. “Who?”

“Don’t know,” I reply with a nonchalant shrug. “Never put a face to them.”

His eyes narrow as the muscle in his jaw ticks. “Let me get this straight. One of your top five wet dreams was having a threesome with me and some mystery guy?”

Honestly, no, it wasn’t. I never dreamt of anyone but Cruz. But two could play this game. If he wanted to tease me, I could right back.
