She nibbles her lower lip and I can tell she doesn’t want to say. “One of her brother’s buddies…his sister…”

“No.” My heart kicks up a notch.

“She’s fine,” Ellery holds up a hand, stopping where my mind was going. “She thought someone was following her and got scared, but when she ran away, she veered into the street and got hit by a car.”

“Fuck.” I run a hand through my hair. “Is she okay?”

“They took her to the hospital. She was pretty banged up but she will be okay. That’s where I was, with Jenica at the store. She was shaken up when she heard. The girl is only thirteen years old.”

“Shit. What about the guy following her?”

Ellery shakes her head. “They looked and asked around, but no one saw anything.”

Well, that settles it. “Okay, consider me your escort for the rest of the summer.”

“Cruz,” she shakes her head.

“No,” I say with authority. “I don’t care what time it is, or where you’re going. If you’re headed anywhere and Jenica isn’t with you, call me. Got it? Actually, what if you came and stayed with me?”

Her lips part and eyes widen with the suggestion. “What if Iwhat?”

I slide my arm down to her waist and drag her down the section of the pier where the light from above doesn’t reach. I’ve seen couples making out here during the concerts, and with no bands scheduled to play tonight, it’s abandoned.

“I mean it.” Grabbing her ass with both hands, I hoist her up and spin her around, pressing her back against the aging wood of the pier studs. “I want you with me,” I whisper, kissing her the way I wanted to when she first arrived.

“Cruz,” she moans, wrapping her legs around me tighter, as I trail kisses down her neck. “Someone will see us.”

“I don’t fucking care.”

“You don’t mean that,” she whispers.

I take a deep breath and pull back. The way she’s looking at me, making my chest ache. “What if I do?”

“Cruz…”

“Aw, fuck, Ellery.” I blow out a tired breath and press my foreheads to hers.

I fucked up when I let her go. I should have tried to find a way for us to be together, not cut her loose. When I’m with her life makes sense, and when I’m not, it doesn’t. Shit….I don’t know what I’m doing anymore.

“Look.” I ease my hold and she slides her legs down my sides, feet hitting the sand gently. “We don’t have to talk about this right now. In fact, I don’t want to waste time talking at all when we can be doing other things.”

Her lips curve into a sexy grin that makes me think all kindsof thoughts. “Such as?”

I run a thumb along her lower lip and lick my own. “Jake is out, Marcus is out, and Cal is out. With Jenica also busy it sounds, it means you and I have the night to ourselves. So, how about a date night?”

I lean in and nuzzle her neck as she runs both hands up my chest. “A date night?”

“Yup. Double feature. What do you say we hole up in my room, make some popcorn, and make out like crazy?”

Ellery and I could never finish a movie and knowing this, she laughs. “Movies, huh? Which ones?”

I swallow down the memory of midnight kisses and credits rolling in the background. “Lost Boys”and “Fright Night.”

“Hmmm.” She brings her hands down my arms., rubbing the inside of my forearms with her thumbs. “Do I sense a theme?”

“Maybe.” I smile. “One is kinda sickly ironic considering what’s been going on around here. But I know vampires are your thing so I thought we could recreate a few scenes. Only you don’t go home at sunrise. You stay with me.”

She searches my eyes, and I know she wants that as much as I do. “You’re on. But how about my place? It’s closer, and that way if the guys come home, we don’t get caught and you regret this little bout of spontaneity.”
