Was this bitch really putting me down right now, in my own room?

Courtney had always been full of herself, but this was taking it to a whole new level.

I didn’t like the way she just waltzed into my house like she owned the place. She did the same thing the day she and the others threw that impromptu pool party atmyhouse and neither sits well with me.

I stare at her, debating whether it’s worth it to even have this conversation, when she flicks her eyes to the bed and then back to me, straightening. “Can I give you a little friendly advice?”

“Advice?” What advice could she have for me? “Depends on what it is,” I reply flatly.

She shakes her head, letting out a short laugh. “You know, you’ve always been this way.”

I cross my arms, matching her stance. “And what way is that?”

“A challenge.”

“You mean not a pushover?” She laughs again and tosses her brassy hair over one shoulder. “Why are you here, Courtney?”

“I’m here to tell you to snap out of whatever is going on with you and focus on what’s important.”

“And just what do you consider important? Keggers withkids? A summer of society balls and other bullshit?”

“Look.” She drops her hands, eyes flashing. “You belong to a world that guys like Royce will one day inherit and those like your stepbrother will serve. It’s time you get your priorities straight and choose the right bed, Elle.”

I roll my eyes, not liking the way she lumped Cruz in with the guy who just weeks earlier, called me a bitch. “And that would be Royce’s?” I laugh. “No thanks. Never gonna happen.”

“Maybe if you stopped fucking your brother it would.”

“Shut your mouth,” I hiss.

“Why, truth hurts?”

“Maybe you’re looking in the mirror Court, because the only one I see with a thing for their brother, is you.”

“Dex is my twin,” she shrugs. “We’re close. So what?”

I can’t help but laugh again. “That’s what they call it now?”

“You’re in no place to throw stones, Elle.”

“You don’t know what you’re—”

“Oh, Cruz, harder,” she cuts me off. “Just like that. Make it hurt.”

There she goes again, imitating me again. But while it doesn’t sound like me, what she’s saying is definitely something I’ve said. Almost as if….

“Have you been spying on me?”

“Now Elle, if I was spying on you, that would mean I was telling the truth about you and stepbrother dearest, wouldn’t it?”

She leans in, eyes narrowed to slits. “Look. I don’t care who you fuck. But from here on out, you need to back the right horse. And just so we’re clear, that’s the pure bred one. Not some filthy fucking half-breed. And you better do it soon, before you’re put out to pasture.”

Righteous anger courses through me as I pull my hand back and slap her. “How dare you! Cruz is better than all of you put together!”

She rubs her cheek, eyes watering. “Ellie, Ellie, Ellie,” she clicks her tongue. The way she says it, sweet with a hint of venom, she’s not mimicking me this time. She’s imitating Cruz. “Your stepbrother is not your future. Royce is.”

I lift my hand again, ready to punch her. “Shut your mouth, Courtney.”

“I will not shut my mouth!” she bites back angrily. “You need to choose.”
