“A lot,” I admit, and take another sip of my drink.

She grins and does the same. “So let me get this straight. You came downstairs and ran into him and his friends?”

“Yes…”

“Were you doing the whole Banana Republic boxers rolleddown on your hips, thing?”

“Yes…” I nod with a laugh. “Why? Are you goingSingle White Femaleon me?”

“Did you know they’re making that into a movie?” She smiles. “I mean, the book was crazy, but can you imagine the movie?”

“Come on.” I hit her on the arm. “Why did you ask about my pajamas?”

“Well…” She sets her drink down. “Now I know why he looked like he was about to punch his friend through the floor.”

I shake my head, not sure what she’s getting at.

“He doesn’t want any guys checking you out, Elle, and if you were in your jammies, there is no way they weren’t. I mean, have you seen you?”

“Oh, come on.” I roll my eyes. “I don’t think he cares about who looks at me, considering he hasn’t said a word to me for two years.”

“If you say so.” She shrugs.

We finish our drinks and she makes us another, and after finishing those, we’re both nicely buzzed.

“Can I ask you a question?” she asks with a loopy smile.

“Of course,” I reply breezily as I rinse out both glasses and put them in the dishwasher.

“How long have you been on birth control?” she asks while putting the vodka and juice in the fridge. “Because my boobs are not nearly the size of yours and I have been on them forever.”

My cheeks turn warm with her question, and I don’t know if it’s the booze or my answer. “I got on them just before Cruz left and never stopped taking them. Figured, better safe than sorry.”

“So, you didn’t stay on them so you could sleep around and get over him faster?” she asks with a hiccup.

“Hardly,” I snort. “He was the first, and only guy I’ve had sex with.”

“Hmmm.”

“Hmmm, what?”

“Earlier, when you said that ship has sailed…I don’t think it has, my friend. For either of you.”

“What makes you say that?” I ask, trying to push aside the way her comment makes me feel.

“Only the fact that it’s universally known the only way to get over your first is to have a second. And the fact you haven’t and the look in your eyes earlier when we were talking about him…”

“What look in my eyes?”

She tightens the flannel tied at her waist and grins. “Oh you know, the one he too had on his face when he came into the store.”

With a flip of her hair she spins on her heel and starts down the hall. “Are you coming?”

Chapter 5

Cruz

“Alright.” Jake steps back and looks at the bottles on the counter with approval. “Now that’s what I’m talking about.”
