She’s wearing a sundress that skims her thighs, and spaghetti straps that tie at the shoulders, and she’s positively radiant with just a hint of sun on her skin and a natural pink in her cheeks.

“In fact…” I make my way over and stop just short of her. “You look good enough to eat.”

She may still be mad at me. In fact, a part of her may hate me. But given the way she’s looking at me, I have a feeling if I picked her up and laid her down on this counter right now, she wouldn’t say no.

She shifts under the weight of my stare, and when she does, one of the straps slips down her shoulder. Sliding my finger under it, I pull it back up, goosebumps shooting down her arms as my finger grazes her skin.

“I always wanted to do that.”

“What?” She swallows. “Fix my dress?”

“No,” I lean in, dropping my voice an octave. “Lay you down on this counter and feast on you.”

Her lips part slightly and she puffs out a breath, eyes wide with surprise.

“But seeing as that’s not going to happen right now…” I swipe my finger along the side of the bowl of cobbler filling and bring it to my mouth, sucking it slowly. It’s sweet, with just the right amount of cinnamon and sugar. “I’ll have some of your cobbler, which is almost as delicious.”

The pulse point in her neck flickers as she runs the tip of her tongue along her top lip. Despite the heat of the kitchen, her nipples harden, and press against the thin fabric of her dress.

I look down the hall, listening for our parents, and when I hear them in the dining room, turn back to her, bringing my mouth close to her ear.

“On second thought,” I whisper in a low, heated growl,“unless you want me to pull that dress down and suck those nipples until they’re red like cherries, maybe you should go upstairs and put something else on, now.”

She draws in a sharp breath and pulls back, eyes searching mine. Just as she starts to respond, the sound of our parents coming down the hall sends us both taking a step back.

By the time they reach the kitchen, she’s already turned and heading up the back stairs.

“So…” My dad grabs my shoulder as I stare after her. “Everything okay?”

“Mm-hmm,” I swallow and turn around. “Ellery went upstairs for a moment.”

“Are you staying?” Saffron asks carefully.

“Of course,” I reply lightly. “Why wouldn’t I?”

They look at one another, exchanging a look, then turn back to me, smiles bright like the sun.

“Well then.” Saffron kisses my father on the cheek then pulls back, making her way over to the stove. “Why don’t you two go outside and enjoy a glass of wine. I’ll call you when dinner is ready.”

“Are you sure?” He eyes the plethora of pots and pans. “We could help.”

“Heavens, no,” she laughs. “It’s almost ready. Go and spend some time together.”

“Well, alright.” My father pours us each a glass of wine, then holds one out to me. “Shall we?

After dinner, Ellery skips out on dessert so she can meet up with Jenica at the boardwalk. When I wave goodbye I give her a knowing look which she returns with the cutest smile.

“So…” my father says, kicking his feet up on the table in front of us. “Are you going to tell me what happened between you andEllery for the two of you to bury the hatchet?”

“What do you mean?” I sit back and take in the view. The moon’s light bounces off the water, sending gentle, glowing waves rolling onto the shore.

Once again Saffron kicked us outside, only this time it was so she could clean up. We both insisted that we help, but she shooed us out the door faster than well, one of my fast balls.

I don’t mind that we were kicked outside. It’s a beautiful night and I can’t help but notice how peaceful it feels being here. It makes me wonder if it’s always been like that, or if having Ellery back in my world again was making me see things in a whole new light.

“Well,” my father eyes me curiously as he continues. “You seemed quite bothered by the fact she would be here when we spoke that day you arrived, and yet tonight has been pleasant. Not a hint of war between the two of you.”
