“Stop trying to win her over when she has every reason to be pissed,” Greyson called.

Jack rolled his eyes. He’d been carrying me down the hall as we spoke, and now we emerged into the sumptuous living room. Dawn streaked the sky, painting the skyline pink and gold. From here, the city was beautiful.

“She has every reason to be pissed at you too,” Jack reminded Greyson as he stepped into the room.

“And I’d rather hear about it,” Greyson’s gaze met mine, a spark kindling in his dark eyes. “I’m not trying to shut my girl up.”

“Hey,” Jack frowned. “I’m not trying to get her to shut up.”

“And everyone can see what you’re doing,” Carter told Greyson, turning away from the window. I didn’t think Carter was ever that obsessed with scenery before.

Carter’s gaze met mine and softened. “Kennedy?—”

“Did Carrie get home alright?” I trusted Keith to look after her.

“Yeah. Of course.”

“Because you’d tell me if she didn’t?” My voice was acerbic.

I pushed away from Jack, and he set me down carefully on my feet, hovering behind me as I crossed the treacherous three feet of plush rug to sink into the sofa.

“We need to talk.” Carter paced back and forth; he was still moving with a faint limp, almost unnoticeable.

But I saw Greyson noticing, his keen, icy blue eyes tracking Carter.

He was the reason Carter was limping, after all. He’d known about his old injury and made sure to take advantage of it.

“Yes.” Sebastian sank into the couch across from me, though he didn’t meet my gaze. “Where were you going last night, Kennedy?”

“Home.”

He chewed his lower lip. “Home? But?—”

“You burnt that down?” I asked crisply.

“That wasn’t your home,” Sebastian looked up, his gaze meeting mine for the first time, and his eyes were crystal clear with certainty. “This is your home. With us.”

“I don’t think so,” I said. I held up my hand, before they could start to argue with me. “I was going to go with Carrie last night. Because you weren’t going to help me. And then—this car jumped the curb and came straight for me. It felt just like…before…” I trailed off, feeling assailed by the memories, as if I were back on that rainy street running the second before the car slammed into me. “I remember that now.”

“I’m sorry.” Carter ran his hand through his hair. “You should never have felt like you needed to go off on your own.”

I didn’t want their apologies. “I want answers. What happened last night?”

And more importantly, what happened all those years ago?

But I needed to understand one piece at a time.

“I went after you. When we realized you were gone.” Sebastian’s face was pale as he replayed the memory, and it made my heart melt…just a little. There was no hiding how emotionally impacted he was by almost losing me. “We all split up. I was the one who went out the front, and I saw you. Frozen. Staring at the car that was racing toward you….”

I bit my lower lip. Why did my malfunctioning brain apparently have no survival instincts? It was as if when my brain was unlocking memories, everything else turned off.

“I tackled you out of the way,” he said. “I’m sorry, Kennedy. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

It was the second apology of the day and it wasn’t even fully sunrise yet. But they weren’t the apologies I wanted or needed. Sebastian obviously didn’t need to apologize for saving my life.

However, he owed me for so many other reasons.

“Greyson, where did you go afterward?” I asked.
