I groan because Caleb is like a dog with a bone. When he sees something he likes or finds amusing, it’s very hard to convince him to let go of it. And right now, he’s finding my feelings for Lottie hella amusing.

Fucker.

“So, what are you going to do? Just stand here all night and not even talk to her?”

That’s the plan.

“She’s busy.”

“Too busy to be introduced to your teammates? To your family? Nah. She’s not that busy,” Caleb retorts. “Come on. Introduce us to your girl,” Caleb insists, pulling on my arm.

Like hell, am I budging even an inch from my spot. I’m fine right where I am.

“Dude, what is the matter with you? That pencil dick is nothing compared to you. So you got a little competition? So fucking what? What you need is a wingman, and though you haven’t offered, I humbly accept the role,” Caleb says with his hand pressed to his heart.

“Caleb,” Erin protests. “Just leave him alone.”

“Oh, come on, Erin. Admit it. You’re just as curious as I am to meet the girl our Nate is crushing on.” He wiggles his eyebrows. “What’s her name again?”

“Lottie… I mean Charlotte,” I reply on autopilot.

“HEY LOTTIE!!! OVER HERE!!!” Caleb shouts over the crowd, making sure that everyone stares at us.

“I’m going to kill you,” I say through gritted teeth.

“Yeah, okay. Kill me later.” He winks. “She’s coming over. Act cool.”

Fuck!!!

I really am going to kill Caleb.

Goddamn it!

I force myself to turn around, unable to hide the scowl on my face with each step Lottie and her boyfriend take towards us.

“Hi,” Lottie says when she finally reaches us, but I don’t miss how she’s unable to make eye contact with me.

“Hi, yourself! We were starting to wonder if we’d ever meet our boy Nate’s matchmaker,” Caleb says, slamming his hand on my back, forcing me to take a step further and face Lottie and her boyfriend head-on.

“Yeah. So, this is Caleb and Jack. They play with me for the Guardians. And this is Jack’s wife, Erin. Guys, this is Charlotte,” I introduce them and quickly take a step back.

“Pleasure to meet you all. Nate speaks very highly of all of you.” She smiles sincerely.

“And you are?” Caleb asks the douche standing far too close to my Lottie.

“I’m Cooper, Charlotte’s fiancé.”

Lottie’s eyes go wide as my heart sinks.

“Fiancé, huh?Slanté,” Caleb says, his previous playful tone nowhere in sight now.

“Thank you. We’re so happy about it,” Cooper says, hugging Lottie to his side. “I mean, we have been dating for ten years now. It’s about time I made an honest woman out of her.”

Asshole.

“Congratulations,” Erin says politely, though her smile looks as strained as the one Lottie has plastered on her face.

“Thank you.” Coop grins widely.
