“No, we’re not.” She shakes her head. “That was just Cooper being Cooper.” She lets out a frustrated exhale. “Sometimes hesays things just to draw attention to himself. I think maybe he was a little intimidated coming here tonight and wanted to make a good first impression.”

“Oh, he made an impression, alright,” I groan.

“I’m sensing you didn’t like him much, huh?”

“You deserve better,” I deadpan. “He’s a dick.”

“You got all that from your two-minute interaction with him?” she asks defensively.

“No.” I frown. “You could have introduced me to any other guy, and I would still say the same thing. You, Charlotte Moore, deserve better. I doubt there is a man alive who is worthy of you.”

My heart beats rapidly in my chest as her eyes lock with mine.

“I… uh,” she stammers as I inch a little closer to her.

“And deep down, I think you know that you are better off alone than being with someone who’s undeserving of you.”

She licks her lips and stares deep into my eyes as I inch closer.

“You make me sound like I’m more than I really am. I’m not perfect, Nate.”

“To me, you are,” I confess with bated breath.

You’re fucking everything.

“That’s a tall order to live up to. No one is perfect, Nate.”

“I disagree. I’m staring at perfection right now. Everything about you is… perfect.”

Her breathing becomes shallow, and her eyes hooded.

“You’re not too bad yourself,” she whispers.

“I’m not?”

She shakes her head slowly, keeping her gaze fixed on mine. We stand there, so close to each other that I can feel the warmth of her breath against my lips. Our bodies are so near to oneanother that I can almost feel her accelerated heartbeat match my own.

“I’ve never met a man quite like you before,” she admits.

“What about being kissed by one?”

“I’ve never been kissed by a man like you, either.”

“Just say the word Lottie, and I’ll happily remedy that.”

“And what word is that?” she pants.

“I forgot. Can’t think straight when you’re looking at me like this,” I confess.

“Like what?” she whispers, her smoldering gaze falling to my lips.

“Like you want me.”

“Is that how I’m looking at you?”

I nod, feeling every inch of my body hard as stone right now. As I lean in further, my heart races with anticipation. Our eyes meet, and a nervous smile spreads across Lottie’s face.

“If that’s true, then what’s stopping you from kissing me?”
