Turn back time and tell me that taking Nate Wilder is a bad idea.

That all it will do is to make me second-guess every decision I ever made.

“No, Becca. There really isn’t anything you can do. I’ll be alright.”

She offers me a commiserating smile and leaves to go back to her desk while I remain standing exactly where I am, just staring at the window, watching the time fly by.

Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to wallow in my pity party for long since I have a business to run, and staring into the horizon won’t do me or my company any good. I let out an exhale and walk back to my desk, my mobile phone ringing the minute I sit down. When I see Piper’s name flash on my screen, I smile.

“Hi, Piper.”

“Hi, stranger. Haven’t heard from you in a while. I was starting to think I pissed you off or something.”

“Nothing of the sort. Just been busy.”

“And when you say busy, please don’t tell me that you got back together with the asshole, Cooper?”

“Piper,” I groan.

“Don’t Piper me. What he did—telling everyone at my birthday party that you two were engaged—was complete bullshit. I mean, even my mother got wind of the rumor.”

“Oh, no! She did?” I rush to ask nervously.

“Don’t worry. I nipped that in the bud fast. She didn’t have time to tell your folks.”

“Thank God.” I sigh in relief. “I don’t know how I’d be able to explain it to my parents otherwise.”

“Easy. You’d just explain it the same way I did my mom—Coop is a lying prick who lives for the attention. Of course, that douche-canoe had to take my thunder on my birthday. The jerk.”

“Piper… can we talk about something else?”

Anything, really, is better than having to relive that awful night.

Or that kiss.

“Fine. That’s not why I was calling you anyway. I wanted to congratulate you.”

“Congratulate me? For what?” I ask, confused.

“For what? Are you kidding me right now? Haven’t you watched the news or been on any social media platform lately? Riley and Nate are now the IT couple of the year. Everyone is raving about how cute they are together. A match made in heaven! You pulled it off, babe. You did it.”

Rocks fling to the pit of my stomach at the excitement in her voice.

“I’m happy they hit it off so well,” I lie.

“Hit it off? Babe, the media is going berserk, saying they hear wedding bells in their future. I might have been a bit skeptical at first with this whole matchmaking plan of mine, especially after seeing Wilder in action with that kindergarten teacher you set him up with, but Riley? She’s perfect for him.Tennis sweetheart, Riley Griffin, melts the heart of NHL retired bad boy, Nathan Wilder. This shit writes itself.”

“I guess you got what you wanted. No one is talking about that video anymore, huh?”

“What video?” Piper laughs. “All anyone can talk about is how these two lovebirds were made for each other. Rumor has it they even spent Thanksgiving together so he could meet her folks.”

“Is that true?” I stammer, shocked by their relationship progressing so fast.

“It is if I say it is,” Piper says with a mischievous taint in her voice.

“You leaked that rumor?” I ask, my shoulders slumping at the lengths my best friend would go for her client.

Then again, it wasn’t so long ago that I would have done almost anything for that particular client, too.
