“This was fun,” Riley says beside me while holding my hand as we walk back to her place.

“Yeah, it was.” I offer her a genuine smile.

I’m not lying.

Every date with Riley has been fun. She’s always the life of a party. With her around, there’s never a dull moment. She’s beautiful, funny, smart. She’s everything a guy would want in a woman.

The full package.

Still, there is something definitely missing between us.

A spark, maybe.

Or chemistry.

Who am I kidding?

I know damn well what’s not right in this scenario.

She’s not Lottie.

It doesn’t matter that I’m completely at ease with Riley. She’ll never be the one I want.

And that, right there, is the fucking tragedy of it all.

Because the woman I do want doesn’t want me.

If she did, she wouldn’t have set me up with Riley in the first place.

“Right?” Riley asks after she’s gone on a tangent about something or other.

Since I have no idea what she’s talking about—having spent the better part of our walk thinking about another woman—all I can do is nod.

She smiles brightly at me and continues talking while I try my best to concentrate on our conversation.

Unfortunately for me, not ten seconds pass by, and my thoughts wander back to my matchmaker again.

I wonder what she’s doing right now?

Is she thinking about me at all?

Of course she’s not.

She’s probably with that slimy asshole she calls a boyfriend.

Fucker.

“Hey, are you alright? You look mad all of a sudden,” Riley asks suspiciously, pulling me out of my pensive reverie and making me aware that somehow we’ve managed to walk right up to her doorstep without me even realizing it.

“I’m good,” I say, which only makes me feel like shit for lying to her. “It was just a long day, that’s all.”

“Well, maybe I can make it a little better,” she coos, running her fingers up and down the zipper of my winter coat. “Do you want to come in?”

I swallow dryly as she bats her eyelashes at me, the urge to bolt as fast as I can in the opposite direction too strong a feeling for me to deny.

But what did I expect?
