‘You’re fucking perfect,’ I want to tell her, but I don’t dare since it might break the spell that she’s under.

“Nate, can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“No judgment?” she asks.

“Isn’t that my line?” I chuckle softly, scanning every inch of her face.

“Please?”

“No judgment. Ever,” I confirm.

“Did you really spend Thanksgiving with Riley’s parents?”

“Who told you that?” I ask, my forehead wrinkling in confusion.

“Well, did you?”

“No.” I shake my head. “I spent it over at Jack’s. Like I do every holiday.”

“You never go home for the holidays? Not even Christmas?”

“No. Boston is my home,” I confess, feeling all the built-up tension of the last few weeks disappear from my shoulders just by looking at the smile on her cupid bow lips.

“I like it that you love it here.” She smiles sleepily.

“What’s not to love?” I retort, but I know damn well I’m not talking about the city of Boston right now.

“Maybe… I mean, if you want… you could spend Christmas with me and my family this year?”

“Is that an invitation?”

“Do you want it to be?”

“Yes,” I reply steadfastly.

“Then consider yourself invited. Though I must warn you, my parents are a handful.”

“I don’t mind.”

Not as long as I get to spend time with their daughter.

“Good. It’s a date.” She yawns.

“Want to go back to sleep?” I ask, feeling a tad guilty for waking her up when it’s very apparent that she’s dead on her feet.

“I would rather talk to you.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I vow.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Nothing could get me off this phone right now. Not even a natural disaster. An earthquake could happen this very second, my house could crumble on top of my head, and I would still find a way to keep her on the line.

“Lottie?” I ask when I sense she’s more asleep than she is awake. “Did we stop hanging out because of that kiss?”
