“Same.” She smiles meekly. “How was your day?”

“Eventful,” I admit.

“Oh?”

“I… um… broke things off with Riley.”

I don’t miss how Lottie’s eyes widen for a beat.

“You did?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

Because I’m in love with you, and dating another woman feels like I’m betraying you.

“She just wasn’t the one,” I answer instead.

“Oh. I’m so sorry,” she replies, but there’s a little smile tugging at her lips.

“Are you? Then why are you smiling?”

“Am I?” She touches her face.

“Did you not find Riley suitable for me? I mean, you were the one who set us up. I thought you’d be more upset.”

“Sometimes the algorithm doesn’t work for everyone.” She shrugs unapologetically, but then her expression morphs into one of concern. “I guess this means I should start looking for other candidates for you, huh?”

“Actually, I think I’d rather put a pin on the whole dating thing for a while.”

“Oh.” She frowns. “Are you firing me?”

“What? No! That’s not what I meant. I just… I just don’t want to think about dating right now. Maybe after the holidays,” I add the last part more for her benefit than mine.

“Oh, okay. You are still coming to my parents for Christmas, right?”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

“Good. I’m glad.”

“Guess you’re stuck with me.”

“Guess I am.”

She smiles so goddamn sweetly that I can’t help but wish I could teleport myself into her bedroom just to kiss her right now.

But if I did that, then I’d have to confess the real reason why I broke things off with Riley.

And no matter what Doc says, I’m not ready to put myself out there like that just yet.

Especially since Lottie still has that dickwad of a boyfriend.

Some assholes have all the luck.
