“Yeah, it looked like you two were getting along just fine. Never seen my dad fawn over someone like that before. Kind of makes me wonder if he would have preferred to have had a son,” she jokes.
“I don’t know about that. He seems very proud of his daughter. He loves you a lot. But then again, who wouldn’t?”
When the line goes quiet, my throat starts to constrict, and I wonder if I said the wrong thing.
“Nate?”
“Yeah?”
“Hang up, okay?”
“I can’t do that,” I grunt.
“Please. I want to try something.”
“Lottie?”
“Please, for me?”
“Okay.”
Though it kills me to do so, I hang up the phone only to immediately regret it when she doesn’t call back. I wait impatiently for the phone to ring, to no avail.
It’s only when the guest bedroom door creaks open that my heart dares to hope.
“Lottie?”
“Shh,” she presses her finger to her lips to keep me quiet while my eyes drink her up in a flimsy t-shirt that shows off her long, bare legs.
I seal my lips shut, watching her move about the dark room on feather-light feet until she’s standing on the other side of the bed.
“Can I get in with you?”
Fuck, yes!
But all I manage to do is nod since I’m too tongue-tied to come up with actual words.
She slides under the covers and shivers when the cold sheets touch her skin.
“You cold?”
“A little bit,” she admits, sticking to her side of the bed.
I stretch out my arm, a silent invitation for her to slide in next to me.
Lottie doesn’t think twice about accepting my offer and cuddles to my side.
“Hmm,” she moans when I wrap my arm around her. “This is exactly how I pictured it would feel like. You’re so warm.”
I’m like a fucking volcano, ready to burst, but I keep that nugget of truth to myself.
“Does it feel nice for you?” she asks, craning her head back just enough to look me in the eyes.
Instead of answering her, all I can do is nod once again.
“Feels like we’ve done this before, doesn’t it? Falling asleep in the same bed?”
“But we haven’t,” I finally manage to say.
